THE HURON EXPOSITOR, June 21, 2000-E
Seaforth a great place to grow up: Devereaux
The following is a "Mv
Hometown" interviett'
prepared by the NHL
player's association.
No wonder Boyd
Devereaux loves to come
home. It seems as though
nothing much has changed
in his hometown,
including the decor in his
bedroom. But just who
exactly is the player
featured in the poster that
hangs on his bedroom
wall? The personable
Edmonton forward admits
there aren't any of his
Oiler teammates, but he's
working on it.
What was your first job
growing up in Seaforth?
"Oh man! I picked stones
on my Uncle Ray's farm. It
was one of the toughest jobs
of all time. You basically go
up and down the rows and
pick the stones that come up
in late spring and early
summer. There are a couple
of guys on each side and
they're responsible for a few
rows. The tractor inches
along and you have to throw
them in the trailer. Those
were pretty long days, but it
was fun, too. I got to work
with some buddies and my
cousin. We joked around
when we were working and
it's not as had as I'm making
it. But it was hot out there
and I definitely got a
farmer's tan."
Any other jobs?
"Just doing some other
farm things. I bated hay and
I also cut the lawn at my
dad's office. He's the lawyer
in town."
After those long days,
what did you do for fun?
"You get involved in a lot
of sports. There's a team to
play on for every kid. I
played a lot of soccer and
baseball and we were
always playing road hockey.
We did a lot of stuff
outdoors because Seaforth
is a great place to grow up
as a kid."
Was it a big culture
shock going from a small
town to a much bigger
city?
"The good thing about
Seaforth is that it's an hour
from London and an hour
from Kitchener. I played my
first Triple A hockey in

London so 1 was lucky in
the sense that I wasn't too
far from home. It was an
ideal place to grow up. it's a
great small town and you're
near some bigger cities, so I
wasn't too shocked when I
arrived in Edmonton."
What's the nightlife like in
Seaforth?
"There's a lot of house
parties. There's one bar
downtown, but the more
popular thing for us was to
go to house parties which is
kind of cool in it's own
way."
What are your fondest
memories of St. James
Elementary school?
"It was great. It was very
small school. We had great
teachers throughout. I was
involved in a lot of sports
and extracurricular
activities. The teachers
really took an interest in the
school sports. If you were a
half -decent athlete, you
were involved in every
event the school put on. We
were playing basketball,
volleyball, baseball and
soccer. They even had a
hockey tournament in the
winter that all the
elementary schools faced -
off in. We always. had fun

an exciting future no matter what path he takes.
"I think the bottom line is, we're all hoping the very best
for him."
While the community has been eager in the past to put
names on telegrams of support duringhis successes, Weber
said people should be just as eager to send cards to him now.
Devereaux is making this decision after coming off his
most productive NHL season, scoring eight goals and 19
assists.

Tell us about the house
you grew up in.
"it's still the same house.
It's a great house. I just love
going home. 1 have a rot of
great memories. It's a nice
big property and I can
remember being out there
kicking around with the
neighborhood kids. I love
going home!"
Is your bedroom still the
same?
•
"Actually my brother and
I stayed in the same room.
My feet are hanging off the
bed these days. Funny thing,
I used to be the biggest Red
Wing fan. I still have
posters of Detroit players in
my room. There's a Michael
Jordan poster on my
brother's side and I've got
one of Stevie Y on my side.
I guess I should put one up
of Doug Weight."
What do you like to do
when you come home?
"I'm starting to get into
the golf a little bit. I'm
excited because I'm getting
a little better at it. I have lot
of fun. There's a great
course in town. We're in.
close proximity to Lake
Huron and we like to get up
to Bayfield and Grand Bend
to, hang out. I also go. to
Kitchener. I played my
junior there and it's a great
place to train."
Give fans a description of
Seaforth.
"It's an agricultural
community. When you drive
through, you'll sec lots of
farmland. The hockey arena
is a big part of the
community. Seaforth's really
typical of the towns that dot
the southwestern part of
Ontario. It's a nice little

What are the reasons why
Seaforth is a great place to
live?
"It's safe. In my own case.
I can remember playing
outside the whole day and I
could hear my mom calling
me for dinner from the
porch. My brother and sister
and I would spend almost
the entire day outside. It's
really a great place to raise
kids."
