Computers make determining
golfing!
Computers have changed
the way we do business. the
-.way we communicate, and
the face of the world today.
Whether you're a computer
nerd or not, your life and
• computers are intertwined
and this extends to the
wonderful world of golf. .
Computerized tee times.
Computerized scoring.
Computerized :handicaps.
: The list goes on and on. It
has certainly made life easier
for many in the golf
business.
The one area that - I
"appreciate mostis the area•of
computerized handicaps. For
many years we used the old
hand written and recorded
handicapping system. .
- Golfers were- supposed to
enter or "post" their Scores
by themselves and then ase a
rather ' complicated
mathematical formula to
determine •:•what their'
handicap was: •
It was a tedious .and•time
consuming process and most
- golfers didn't -want to be
bothered. The end result was
that many golfers did not
establish a handicap and that .
made for -tome "animated
discussions at competition
time
The' purpose'of a handicap
is to -enable" golfers- `of
varying skill levels to
compete with each other ona
more equal footing. [t results
in closer competitions and •
more interest in the game.
A ,golfer needs 19 play a •
minimum of five 1.8 -hole
rounds. to establish -a
temporary handicap. Once
First tournament
of season on today
the goiter has 20 18 -hole
scores .posted then the
handicap is a true handicap. "
However, it doesn't stop.
'there. Every "score must be
posted and thus the handicap
fluctuates depending on
whether the player is playing
well nor not. .
A- true handicap is based
on the 10. best scores from'.
the last 20 rounds played.
. The handicap can be
compiled of scores up to two
years old; so that a player
could take a year off and still
begin golfing again with att.
established handicap.
Oh yes. It .was called a
handicap for years. then an
index and now as of 2000 it
is a handicap factor. The
maximum handicap is a 40
s and the minimum is a plus.
•two. •
The factor is used as a
starting number at various
courses. Each course is rated
as to its degree of difficulty
icourse rating and slope
raiing :combined). Your
factor is used along with the
course: rating and siope to
determine your handicap on
that particular course. • .
Since Seaforth's rating and
slope rating is in the mid -to
low range. most players will
• find that .heir handicap will
he higher when they compete
on he norc difficult courses

The good. -news about
handicapping nd computers
is that much of the work is
done by the computer now
• and that makes keeping •your
•factor up to date much easier
.for all involved: `there is.
.really no excuse these days
for not. posting scores. •
Once your name and • call
number is entered in. your
club's computer. you just
have to come• in -and post
your score keeping in mind
equitable stroke control
which is a whole other
column It takes about 30
seconds. -and the coinputer
does all the calculations for
'.you.
I didn't reaiiieihow .much
• golfers' • relied ..on 'the
computer until our handicap
system had -to be•updated for
Y2K.
.-'Almost every day several
golfers were asking when the -
computer would. he up and
running so they could post
their scorns. 'This would
never have happened under
the old manual: system and •
for. that. thank you Mr:.
Computer.
