Given the events that- have occurred in
Walkerton over the last few weeks. officials
from the' Huron County Health Unit are
hoping that rural residents will realiic the
importance of having their wells tested on a
regular basis.

water is an•itnportant issue." Sheryl Fcagan,

importance .of securing and protecting our
water supply is the issue that remains.".

Tuesday. the health unit received over 400
samples of water from Huron residents to he
tested. She added that they normally receive
between seven and `10 samples'to he tested.
in general. ourwater supplies are safe,"
-said Fcagan. adding though that the events
that have occurred in Bruce County clearly`
indicate the importance of regularly well
testing. "People should he aware of the
consequences of not testing...and I hope what
falls away from. this tragic situation in•Bruce
County is people will not forget (to have their
wells tested)." • - -

their efforts to ensure safe water supplies. in

nutrient management as well as the aquifer
'study that is presently underway. . '

look for ways: to ensure our water supply
stays safe.".said Steenstra, county

Straight Talk From
THE
BUSINESS
DOCTO
Franchising-
Rav Kron;' found a better
way. - ,Ray: Kra: • founded
MacDonalds. He .refined
an old concept called fran-
chising. that had- been
--around' for15Oyears.and
made it • the single- most
important business' format
of the modern age.
Franchising' is. a system
designed 16duttlicate excel-
lence, The first step•in the
process is -to develop a suc
cessful prototype business.
with systematized process-
es. Oncethat is achieved
every operational detail is
defined in manuals creating
a recipe -of how to duplicate
that first effort. From then
on it is like baking a Choco--
late cake:. If you follow the
recipe you get a pretty good,
_chocolate • cake.
Theoretically • 'the 1,000ih'
unit will operate as success-
fully as the first.' ..
*At its best it is an awesome
process. At its'worse it can
financially cripple you.
The myth that has grown up
around 'franchising is, you
can't fail if you buy a fran-
chise. The numbers quoted
arc usually around a 5%
failure rate. That 'figure is
probably valid if, you are
looking at a MacDonalds or
one of the other excellent
franchises available. The
reality is that less than 209E
of the franchisers become
success stories. Exactly
how many franchisees get
burned is unknown.
Buying a franchise is as
serious a game as any other
• business venture. You must •
be careful and -look hard at
_what. you are getting into.
Seek outside assistance and
understand- clearly what
you are buying. What you
are buying in a franchise is
the .recipe and. the name,
recognition or positioning
that the company holds. in
the consumer's. mind. ' The
greater the name recogni:
tion the higher the franchise
fee. Positioning, or fop of
mind name recognition. is
the single most important
requirement for the success
of any business: If you
aren't buying it -then you
will have to build it. .
Aside from positioning_the
quality --and detail of the
recipe. is crucial. But even
the best recipe can ; only
take you so far. .Eventually
your continued success will
depend .on your skill and
the ongoing, marketing sup-
port you get from your fran-
chiser (a franchise that isn't
growing is dying). When
you buy a franchise you are
not buying a job. You are
buying a business and just:
like any other business your
ultimate success will
depend on what happens
when you • and your people
stand belly to belly with the
customer. A well known
franchise name may bring
in potential customers.
Whether they return or not
will depend on you.
