Women get awards
Two local women have
received awards from the
Huron Perth Chapter of the
Council for Exceptional
Children.
Janice Richardson and Gail
Moffett received Outstanding
Service to Children with
Special Learning Needs.
Richardson, from Seaforth,
is a teacher at Seaforth Public
School while Moffett, from
Egmondville, teaches at
Central Huron Secondary
School.
According to bios about the
women written for the award,
"Richardson has proven to be
an indispensible addition to
the staff of Seaforth Public
School. Her work is of great
benefit to the large number of
children with whom she has
worked over the last five
years. Janice's friendly and
quiet manner nurtures,
encourages and supports her
students in an atmosphere of
humour and patience.
"Janice very successfully
assists the teachers in making
necessary program
adjustments for the students,
and provides valuable input
when reviewing program
success. Her creative delivery
of program adjustments
enhances students' learning.
Janice's use of initiative is
much appreciated by her
colleagues. Even in the
absence of teaching staff, she
organizes classroom materials
and prepares teaching aids.
When supervising students
outdoors, she is always
conscious of safety needs and
willingly organizes suitable.
activities to keep children
occupied.
"Janice is viewed as an
educational assistant who
provides exemplary support
and often exceeded
expectations."•
"Moffett is an educational
assistant at Central Huron
Secondary School in Clinton,
and has been at CHSS since
April 1990.
"Gail provides support for
exceptional students in
Grades 9 to 12 who have
learning disabilities or
behavioural difficulties. This
support includes readings,
scribing, organizational
support, testing
accommodations and
behavioural modifications
support.
"Gail works closely with
students, and gives freely of
her own time to provide extra-
curricular opportunities to all
students in the school. She
works well with all staff
members and is considered by
her staff to be the epitome of a
paraprofessional.
"Gail's assistance with
school fund raisers
demonstrates her commitment
and dedication to the whole
school."

Business Corporation gets $200,000
Huron -Bruce MP Paul Steckle recently
announced on behalf of Andy Mitchell,
Secretary of State (Rural Development). a
$200,000 Industry Canada investment.
The investment will promote economic
development in the Huron -Bruce region and
contribute to continued operations at the
Huron Business Development Corporation
(HBDC).
"This government believes the people of the
Huron -Bruce region can best identify their
own economic and business development
priorities," said Steckle. "This funding will
enable the Huron Business Development
Corporation to build on the strengths of the
regional economy and create jobs."
The Huron Business Development
Corporation is one of 52 Community Futures
Development Corporations (CFDCs) in
Ontario funded by Industry Canada. They
employ local staff and are governed by a
volunteer board of directors made up of
community members representing the private
sector, municipalities and other not-for-profit
economic development stakeholders.
"The Government of Canada values rural
communities, and is working to strengthen
and diversify local economics with
investments like this," said Mitchell.
The HBDC has recently earned an Award
of Rural Excellence for its contribution to
economic growth. It provides business
counseling to entrepreneurs, offers alternative
financing to small business and supports
community projects that boost the local
economy. The award was sponsored by
Pioneer Hi -Bred Ltd. and the Foundation for
Rural Living.
During its 6 years of operation in the area,
the HBDC has loaned over $2 million to 55
businesses. These businesses invested
$870,000 into their operations and were able.
to lever over a million more dollars from other
lenders in the area. Since its start in 1993, the
organization's efforts have impacted
positively over 400 jobs in the community.
