Landfill solution could keep it 5o years

existing landfill sites in
Huron County could see the
waste capacity throughout the
county last for well over 50
,years.

Associates updated Huron
County Council recently on
the status of the county's
Waste Management Plan. He
said that changes to Ministry
of Environment regulations
`would allow a municipality to
use another municipality's
landfill site,- a process being'
presently undertaken between
the Towns of Wingham and
Exeter. •
%Vingham's licence for its
landfill site runs out in June
and the town is currently
trying to work out an
agreement with Exeter to start
taking its garbage.
It would be designated a
single service area. allowing
the movement of waste from
one municipality to another
.conditional on agreement .of
those municipalities as well
as the revision of design and
operation plans of individual
Sltes.
Gary Davidson. director of
planning and development.
said that while the entire
county would he considered
one service area, the landfills
sites will remain under the
operation of the
municipalities.
Janes said that. unlike
many municipalities
throughout Ontario. Huron
County appears to have
significant landfill capacity.
"You have to optimize what
you have," he said, adding
;hat continuing to implement
user fees, increasing
participation in recycling and
improving landfill operations
could greatly extend the life
of the county's landfill sites.
"If you can achieve that
than I think you have the key
to a long-term efficient waste
management plan." Janes told
county council, adding that
the county did have MOE
support for this proposal.
