Unfortunately, Moe took ill just days before the event and was unable to fulfill his commitment. The good news is that a recovered Moe will be in Seaforth on Sunday,. June 11 at 1 p.m. for a 90 -minute demonstration of shot making. the likes of which most area golfers have `never seen. "Moe who?' you ask. Let me tell you a little about this world famous Canadian golfer and member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame. I. remember meeting•Moe when I was very young and we .would be traipsing off to one golf course after another watching' • • Dad • play competitive golf. •Moe and Dad are contemporaries and have played • many a • round together since the 50s and 60s when both were at the peak of their careers. I .remember that Moe always . dressed "differently" and he spoke in an unusual. repetitive style. He was extremely shy yet he always hit it off well with Dad. - Their battles on the links were what they both relished. Sometimes Dad won - sometimes Moe.' They recognized each other's skills and enjoyed the fierceness of the competition.' During this time there was a good slate of other exceptional amateurs from Ontario and the tournaments in this area fielded some great players. Moe was always the one to beat. . One day year •ago.. I was. sitting at my desk at the golf course and •I took a short break. Looking out the window I saw a golfer in •bright purple .golf slacks coming down. the fourth -fairway. 1 thought to myself. "How did that guy. get out there without paying?" He took a swing. 7 thought. "Wow! that looks like Moe Norman! I grabbed the binoculars and headed for .the deck where -1 watched him finish his round. He came in. -got a Coke. asked where Dad was. and then left. 'There I was having a Coke with a legend and not asoul to witness it. A t the Canadian. Open a few years ago, the players were busy practicing on the range when Moe arrived wearing one'of his unusual colour combinations. He wandered up and down the range pulling clubs out of player's golf bags and conversing in his unusual repetitive style: • Finally he stopped at one of the player's golf bags. pulled out -a club and started striking • shot after shot straight and true out into the middle of the range.' Before you knew it: the players had all stopped hitting and gathered around to watch Moe. There .was a huge gallery sitting in the stands. There were the fans watching. the PGA players watching Moe Norman hit balls. At the PGA Show in Orlando a couple of winters ago. Moe had just signed a big contract with the Titleist people and he was being wined and dined. interviewed and filmed. Right in the .middle of an interview he spotted Dad going down the aisle. He stopped the interview. headed for Dad. punched Dad in the shoulder. and then continued to chat away in front of a completely bewildered camera crew -and interviewer. Just last summer I received a rain cover order from people in Chicago over the telephone. 'they asked where Seaforth was locate.d 'and when I said Ontario.. Canada their first response was. "Do you know Moe Noiman?". There have been •1.00s of newspaper and magazine articles written about Moe. the man and his unique ball- striking technique. Recently his swing method has been. featured on the Golf Channel and infomercials.Every golfer wants to hit the ball as straight and consistently as Moe Norman. There is an etcellent book "The Feeling of Greatness" . by Tim O'Conner that tells about Moe's life and many of the wonderful stories about his golf experiences. Moe is from Kitchener. and he played much of his early golf at Rockway. the public course .right in the middle of Huron Hurricanes g et medals the.city, that was the home to many great amateur. players like Cowan. Weslock and Kesseiring. He has played golf all over North America. He enjoyed amateur golf but was forted to give up his amateur status after selling some of his many prizes for cash. After all. as Moe wondered. what's .a guy going to do with all those- televisions? Moe neyer fared as well on the professional circuit. Some say'it was the pace of play that did him in. Moe likes t play very fast and we all know that PGA players are methodical. to say -the least. Others -say.' it was because of Moe's inability to face the adoring public that success on the professional tour eluded. him. PerHaps it was a combination of factors or something else entirely. Everyone who knows' Moe knows that he has difficulty with the public. After the movie; "The. Rain Man". many of Moe's acquaintances. including member of our family. came away ` from ..the movie thinking that. Dustin Hoffman's character was just like Moe Norman. I guess Moe is a golfing savant. The stories are endless and many involve the greatest 'names in golf. If you a attending the demonstratio on June 11. you will hear the stories and then some.
