texture of braille," she says.
Because Jason is totally
blind and cannot tell the
difference between. day and
night. the Lamonts help him
distinguish between the two
with noises by putting on the
radio during Jason's daytime
nap and the vaporizer in his
room at night.
"And, he sleeps all night
from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., says
Tracy.
Noises also help Jason tell
which room he is in since the
television is always on in the
living room.
"He gets fussy if the TV or
the radio aren't on," says his
mom.
He can also distinguish
between family members by
the special songs and noises
they always use when they
are with him.
Because vision plays a big
part in stimulating babies to
learn to move. Tracy says
Jason learning to roll and .sit
up on his own were big
milestones.
"He wiggles from one side
of the room to the other. He's
a very happy and active baby
and that's a good thing
because being still and
content would not help him
develop, even though that
keeps me really busy," says
Tracy.
When he learns to walk
around age two, he'll be
introduced to a white cane
but Tracy says she and her
husband have to be careful
that the cane doesn't
interfere with his walking
and is only used as a
substitute for sight.
Guide dogs won't be used
until Jason is at least 16
when he can take full
responsibility for the dog,
learn the hand signals and
learn that the dog is more
than just a pet.
Because of Jason's
extreme prematurity at birth,
Tracy says he is at high risk
for other disabilities such as
cerebral palsy but so far, his
blindness is his • only

OPP contract expires, town seeking new contract
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
The town will be
negotiating a new contract
for OPP policing after its
current, five-year contract
expires in October.
"We need to look at
getting in contact with them
to come up with pricing for a
new service," said Deputy
Reeve Bill Teall, the town's
representative on the police
services board.
While the negotiations
are between the OPP's
contract policing branch and
the town. Teall said they
could expand the contract to
include the new municipality
of Huron East when it forms
Jan. 1, 2001 after Seaforth
amalgamates with Brussels
and Tuckersmith, McKillop
and Grey Townships.
Teal! said a motion was
needed from council for the
police services board to go
ahead and start negotiations
with the OPP.
There were questions
about what type of contract
the'town should seek because
of the pending amalgamation
and issues of whether or not
linking other municipalities
together could generate more
savings through the contract.
Reeve Lin Steffler said
the motion has to be specific,
requesting a costing for OPP
policing that is adequate and
effective for the community.
Teall said without
specifics in the contract, the
town becomes responsible
for making sure the police
are doing a proper job rather
than OPP management.
The current contract
also covers portions of
Tuckersmith and McKillop
Townships but those
townships arc billed on a per

call basis if police service is
needed. The contract sets the
standards by which OPP
police the town such as the
fact officers are only on duty
20 hours a day, rather than
24.
Without a contract
specifying the quality of
policing required, such as the
inclusion of' community
services like programs in
schools and the number of
officers assigned to the town,
police provide a minimum
standard that would see
officers in the town as part of
their regular patrols of Huron
County highways.
The current contract also
specifies -that there be a
policing office in the town.
Steffler said Brussels has a
"storefront" office in the
library. A storefront is a
designated location where
officers can stop to make a
call, meet with someone or
do paperwork and in the case
of Brussels. it is simply a
table with a phone in a corner
of the library.
She said when the town
negotiated its first contract.
that level of service. although
it would save money, was not
found acceptable .by the
community and a proper
officer was established.
Teall said a garage could

to be used by the nese Huron
East municipality. -
"They need somewhere
