Golfers need
rule on soggY
That was the Most "casual water",
. we have ever had at the local golf
courser
Last Frid'ay night's storm 'left
much of the bark nine under water
and most 'of the bridges on both
, nines were relocatdd making
-crossing- the streams: almost.
impossible. . - • ,
`• The course was cl9sed as a crew of 10_
workers retrieved bridges and anchored them
back into place. It was a difficult task in the •
freezing cold water with a _strong current
fighting all the way.
The most amazing thing was to. see the
large bridge between number 11 :and 13
without its base. The "old dump. road -bridge"
looks so solid and strong that it was difficult .
to believe that the power of the water could
lift up the bridge's base and carry it away.
The water. was as high as the 16th. green:
higher than any of us 'remember. •
At/the time of this writing. The water Was
receding quickly but the back pine was still
closest 'and -no power cans• were • allowed, on
the course until things dried up considerably.
It seemed an appropriate time to introduce
-soine.golfers to the concept of "casual water"
, and the rule that prevents golfers from having
—to play ip it. .
The casual water rule is a part of rule
number 25 - abnormal ground conditions and
wrong putting green. Casual water is defined
as "any temporary accumulation of water on
the course which is visible before oraftcr the
player takes his stance and is not in a water
hazard.". Dew is -not casual water.
Well. the water on the course recently and
muc tI—of whoa -stili there is definitely -casual —
water. The large puddles in the lower -areas of
some of the fairways wilt eventually. -dry up,
hence the -"temporary" classification.
When the ponds and streams overflow•their
hanks and the watergoes outside of the red or
yellow lines and stakes that define•these
water hazards. then the water outside of the
hazard is also defined as casual water.
Now we know what it is and where it is,
but how do we deal with it in our game of
• golf' Well if your golf ball lies in or touches
the casual water or if you have to stand in the
water to make your shot, you may choose to
play the ball as it lies or you may take relief
without penalty under most circumstances.
Remember that you can never move the
golf ball closer to the hole. If you have
interference to your swing or stance from
casual water, what you do is find the nearest
place that you can stand and swing without
being in the casual water, but not closer to the
hole. Once you find that spot, you can then
drop the ball for another ball if you can't
retrieve the first one in deep casual water,
within one club length of that spot.
There is no penalty for this drop.
1. The later dated cheque is
for travel fee only. Minor
hockey will increase fees by
525 -after the June dates so
don't miss it.
If you are ndt sure- your
child wants -to` play or not.
register anyway and the
cheque can .he returned to
You if they are not playing.
Minor hockey wishes to.
' tbank ,everyone for your coL
operation. Registration has to
he held early so they can
prepare for next season
during the summer.

casualwater
golf .courses
By Carolanne Doig
It' your ball is on therputting, green and ;
there's casual water•you don't have -to pun
through it either. You may lift the ball and
place it in a spot that gives you relief from the
casual water - remember never closer.to the
hole. Oh yes, you can clean the ball when you
take relief from casual water. -
[once played in- a tournament in Stratford
at the country club. which is located along the
banks .of the .Ajion River. There had been a
severe storm the night before but qhe
tournament was, still held. What at day that
.was."The score escalated because of -the
casual water on the course.
You would hit areasonably -good drive that
would land in casual water in the middle of,
the fairway,
Of course. there • was absolutely no roll so
extra distance"was" impossible -to, obtain.
'Sometimes the ball was lost in the casual
water and sometimes it was retrieved. To get
relief no nearer the hole: We were constantly
backtracking to find a spot to hit from.
-Sometimes there was no place to go so you
just hit from the sopping mess. It was a long
course and t'very long day. The situation will
be much the same at many golf courses in our
area for the next week or so. Remember the
casual .water rule and use it to your
advantage.. -
Last,week at the Seatorth-GolfClub the
following things took place: - two hole in
ones were scored: Keith Connolly aced the
10th hole on Tuesday night and Steve Knight
aced number three on Sunday morning.
Linda Doig had the least number of putts
at Ladies Night.
•Members remember to sign up for match
play events and mentor nights.
-The SOS Scramble was held on Saturday
at 3:30 p.m. - delayed by Mother Nature.
