Support staff
reach agreement

By Scott Hilgendorff different contracts between
Expositor Editor — staff of the former Huron and
Perth school boards that were
amalgamated into the Avon
Maitland board.
The staff has been without a
•contract since the
amalgamation. •
Karkheck said this contract
was difficult because it had to
be•done from the beginning
because of the two different
contracts the board and union
was working with.
However. this contract
covers from July, 1998 to June -
2000 and will expire a few
days after it is ratified.;.
The staff will again he.
without a contract. but
Karkheck expects they will be
back at the negotiation table.
this year.
She said the -situation will.
give .the board a chance to
deal with a pay equity
situation and, with a newly
developed contract. will give
them a strong foundation from
which to work.
A strike by Avon Maitland
District School Board support
staff was averted last week
when the support staff of the
Ontario Secondary School
Teachers' Federation came to
a tentative agreement with• the
board on May 9.
A mediator helped staff and
the board reach an agreement
before a strike could occur last
Wednesday.
Mary Jane Karkheck,
president of the Office
Clerical Technical Educational
Assistants, represented by
OSSTF, said the union has
agreed not to talk about the
terms in the contract until after
a ratification vote on May 24.
The Avop Maitland District
School Board said in a press
telease, the new contract
harmonizes all the terms and
conditions of employment for
employees in the OCTEA
group. The contract
harmonized two distinctly

"The lightning was so

I opened the door and the
water was coming in my car,"
she said.
Her son, Rudi, had come
back for her and was yelling
at her to g5t out: He risked
the lightning and, in water up
to his knees, pushed the car
to the side of the road to
prevent anyone else on the
road from colliding with it,
and drove Degroot home.
"My nerves were totally
wrecked," she said.
She was in for another
surprise Saturday when she
went hack to get her car.
The black car was brown
with mud, dirt and debris
from area fields but when she
put her key in the ignition, it
started and she was able to
drive it away from a stretch
of road that had lost most of
its shoulders during the
flooding.
Jim Hallman, maintenance
coordinator with the Ministry -
of Transportation in Goderich
said 120 metres of shoulder
was washed awhy from the
south side of Highway 8 to a
depth of about two -and -a -half
feet.
When Hallman arrived on
the scene about 12:30•a.m, he
said the water had already
subsided from the road.
It took 200 metric tonnes
of gravel on Saturday to
restore the shoulders in that
area and .crews continue to
work this week repairing
several more minor washouts
along Highway 21.
Area township road
superintendents could not be
reached by press time for
comment about the siftratifftru
on country roads but several
area farmers reported minor
washouts on many back roads
around Seaforth as culverts
backed up during the
onslaught of rain.
In town, Silver Creek
almost filled Lions Park Pool
and flooded much of eastern
portions of town, forcing the
evacuation ofthe basement '
