Who cares about you?, I'm not sure. If you are lucky, your mother does. If you are really Iucky your spouse and a few close relatives will care about you. One thing is for sure, your customers don't care about you. Oh, they don't want you to drop dead or any- thing like that you just aren't on •the list of things they care about. If you were on the list you would be in very small print way down at the bottom. Isn't that an ego busting.. thought. Maybe they would care if you took out; an ad and told them how nice you are or how long you've been in business or how much tax you pay in the community. Boy I bet that would make them care. Good Luck. Advertising can do five things. It can inform. It can generate leads. It can position and. maybe if you are really good and understand the process, and have enough space, then maybe, just maybe advertising can sell: The fifth thing advertis- ing can do is satisfy your ego. Most of us would like to think our ads are going to bring in 100 cus- tomers tomgQrrow morn- ing. (Udfortunately, most advertising • is business ego centered rather than customer centered.) Here is a lit- tle eiercise that might prove beneficial.' Pick any ad from a newspaper and ask yourself what the adver- tiser intended to accom- plish. Was it designed to inform. generate leads, position, sell or satisfy the business's ego? Why didn't This ad cause' you to go buy the product? What is there in the ad that addresses what you • personally care about? What spe- cific benefits does the ad' define that would cause you to go buy?. The customer isn't moti- vated to act by features, advantages or pretty pictures. The customer only cares about one 'thing. What's in . it for me baby? Like you, the customer cares about him or her- self and their family. If that ad you are looking at isn't framed around that reality why would you expect it to cause action? The other thing to remember is that people scan newspapers. They stop to read at head- lines that attract their self-interest.. If the headline doesn't address 'what's in it for me' the 'rest of the ad doesn't "matter. They aren't going to read it anyway. - Given this discussion most of the ads you are looking at suck big time don't they? The Business Doctor is available for annual meetings & sales con- ventions.
