Rec department bitten by love

The•"I.ove bug," a now
infamous computer virus that
struck around the world last
week, took a small bite out of
Seaforth.
"It basically erased all my
j -peg [picture] files," said
recreation director Marty
Bedard who opened the e-
niail message Thursday.
Warnings issued by e-mail
. and media came too late for
Bedard who lost picture tiles
from his computer when the
virus was released into his
hard drive by opening an e-
mail attachment - titled,
"ILOVEYOU."
The virus, spread by a -mail.
around the world destroying
files in personal computers.
and causing havoc across
Canada from investment
banks to the Ontario
legislature.'
Canadian and American
wire services reported
astonished computer experts
who had never seen a
• computer virus spread so
quickly:
The virus would use each
computer's e-mail address
books to.send itself to other
machines if users were on-.
line.
Bedard received the
contaminated e-mail from.the
recreation department in
Hanover which had his
address in their computer
system.
Bedard wasn't on-line at
the time he received the virus
and doesn't believe it was
forwarded from his machine
to any other systems.
Aside from_ destroying
some picture files on his
computer; Bedard said there
was tittle damage done that
would interlace with his
department's oration.
"I had to delete all the files
affected. .They couldn't by
cleaned," he said.
While Bedard is a Town of
-Seaforth employee, his office
is in a separate facility and '
his computer is ' not
networked to Town Hall
computers,. preventing the
virus from spreading there.

-Communications Co-
. Operative. Limited (TCC) in•
Kippen. Bedard's internet
provider. said the .recreation
department was the only
customer to report the.virus
last week..
"It's quite a bad one," said
bug virus
Sharon Chuter, TCC general
Manager.-
She is recommending
people using internet services
make sure they have an
upda,table virus checking
program, but, more
importantly, she said they
need to be sure- they update
the program regularly.
"Don't just put a -virus
checker on your machine and
do nothing with it;" she said.
TCC will be. sending out a
recommendation .to its
customers to. advise them to
take virus checking
precautions seriously.
"Viruses are very. scary. it's
amazing how people can do
it," she said of the number of
viruses that programmers
unleash through e-mail and
the internet.
