Council also approved this month that two acres be set aside around the cairn • where one tree will be planted for every body buried behind the' county's Health and Library Complex at the old Huronview site. The graveyard was used for the burial of residents of the House of Refuge from 1895 to 1929. "I am very pleased," said Reg Thompson, of county council's actions. Thompson is a member of the Stone Angels, a group that has been working for the restoration of the cemetery. According to Thompson, when the county stopped using the land as a burial site in 1929, county council then had a caim erected listing those who were buried there. The original site was fenced and trees were planted, but over the years, both the trees and fence disappeared. For many years, the land around the caim had been rented to a farmer for crops. But, in 1998, the cairn was also removed. Since then, the Stone Angels, together with the county, have been working to ensure the graveyard is restored and a new caim crated. A traditional style caim, costing approximately $5,000, will be built: Four tablets will be placed on the new caim, said Thompson, one with the history of the site and three replicas of the original tablets which include the names of those buried there. Thompson added that the Stone Angels have committed themselves to raise the funds for the tablets. He also stated that the Huron Historical Society has indicated their willingness to help with the project. Thompson said he hoped to see the trees planted later this spring with construction of the calm beginning as soon as possible. 'The sooner the better." he said. "It's been long enough now."
