County approves
cairn reconstruction
By Amy Zoethout _
Goderich Signal -Star Staff
Huron County Council approved the reconstruction of a cairn
marking the graveyard where more than 120 Huron County
pioneers were buried.
Council also approved this month that two acres be set aside
around the cairn • where one tree will be planted for every body
buried behind the' county's Health and Library Complex at the old
Huronview site. The graveyard was used for the burial of residents
of the House of Refuge from 1895 to 1929.
"I am very pleased," said Reg Thompson, of county council's
actions. Thompson is a member of the Stone Angels, a group that
has been working for the restoration of the cemetery.
According to Thompson, when the county stopped using the
land as a burial site in 1929, county council then had a caim erected
listing those who were buried there. The original site was fenced
and trees were planted, but over the years, both the trees and fence
disappeared. For many years, the land around the caim had been
rented to a farmer for crops. But, in 1998, the cairn was also
removed.
Since then, the Stone Angels, together with the county, have
been working to ensure the graveyard is restored and a new caim
crated.
A traditional style caim, costing approximately $5,000, will be
built: Four tablets will be placed on the new caim, said Thompson,
one with the history of the site and three replicas of the original
tablets which include the names of those buried there. Thompson
added that the Stone Angels have committed themselves to raise
the funds for the tablets. He also stated that the Huron Historical
Society has indicated their willingness to help with the project.
Thompson said he hoped to see the trees planted later this spring
with construction of the calm beginning as soon as possible.
'The sooner the better." he said. "It's been long enough now."

How can I be assured that the funeral home I

assistance for my loved ones when I'm gone?

ANDERSON: In loving memory of
our grandson, Luke, April 26, 1997.
Those we love remain with us,
For love itself lives on.
Cherished memories never fade,
Because one loved Is gone.
Those we love can never be,
More than a thought apart.
For as long as there's a memory,
They live on in our heart.

Except to wish with all our hearts,
That he was here today.
He couldn't say goodbye to us,
He couldn't see our tears.
But he left us with beautiful memo-

We will treasure through the years.

Sci-Tech Olympics complements science fair, May 3
On Wednesday, May 3, more than 300
students from across Huron and Perth will
gather at the Stratford Coliseum for the ninth
annual Sci-Tech Olympics challenge.
Some of these students are winners from
local school competitions and all will be
representing their schools in events that test
their problem -solving and team -work skills,
and their knowledge of science and technology.
Timed challenges for the teams of students
include the Rube Goldberg and Triathlon full-
day events and the vehicle and construction
half-day categories.
The Rube Goldberg activity requires students
to build a contraption with as many steps as
possible to make something happen such as
setting off a mouse -trap. The contraption is

The other three events all involve students in
following instructions and finding creative
solutions while working together as a team.
Events are judged by volunteers from the
education and local communities including thc
business and technology sectors.
While the event is fun it also gives an
enriching learning experience that may help
