A.Y. McLean collection added to town museum
By Susan Hundertmark
Expositor. Staff
While she's only weeks
into the job of cataloguing
thc A.Y. McLean collection
for the Seaforth and Arca
'Museum, Dianne Smith says
perusing through century -old
newspapers shows Seaforth
as "quite a booming.] lace
one hundred years ago.
Smith has been hired by
the town of Seaforth for the
next four to five months to
- catalogue the 'collection of
A.Y. McLean; former
publisher and editor of The
Huron Expositor and Huron
member of parliament from
1940-53, who died in 1988.
She says old newspapers
and maps of the town in the
collection show that Main
Street was filled with
businesses from the railway
tracks to Godcrich Street,
both on the ground floor and
the, second and third storeys
of .buildings.
The,y also show hotels
around thc railway tracks
along with carriage factories
and planing ,mills and
businesses along Goderich
Street near the Queen's
Hotel.
"There were half a dozen
groceries, half a dozen dry
goods stores, a couple of -
bank& drug stores and vets,
' four doctors and many
lawyers in town back then,"
, she says. , • -

Seaforth deputy clerk
Cathy Garrick says that while
the museum committee hasn't
yet finalized which building.
the first of a series of
ornaments may feature, it is
considering the 1879 Seaforth
high school and the Queen's
Hotel. -
"Whenever you talk` to
someone from outside of.
Seaforth, they seem to know.
the Queen's Hotel. Half of
Ontario seems td have been
there at some point of their
lives Y says Garrick..
She says Queen's Hotel
owner Betty Kittar has given
permission to the museum
committee for the-hotel•to be
featured on the ornament but
the high school might still be
the first of the pewter
decorations to be,released this
year. -
- Museum committee
members have approached
local businesses, who said
they .would be willing to sell
the decorations in their stores ;
at a suggested price of $10.
Garrick says thc ornament
arc made by a Nova Scotia
company which has-been-
sending
as been•sending a cata)ogue to the
town for years. •
"This is an idea we've had
for long time' and the
museum committee seems a
good body to do it with." she
says.

put this collection on -a

The collection includes
some personal papers,
including letters to A.Y.
McLean and his father Keith,
concerning the family
newspaper business - the
McLeans owncd The Huron
Expositor for three
generations - and their
involvement in politics.
"1 haven't been through the
personal papers yet so I don't
really know what's there
yet," says Smith.
From the A.Y. McLean
collection, Smith says the
museum committee might be
able to put together a walking
tour of the town, detailing all
the different businesses that
used to be located in various
buildings in Seaforth's
downtown.
