Committee structure could change
as County looks at doubling meetings
By Amy Zoethout

Huron County Council
will beginlooking at
reconfiguring the present
county committee structure
. and could increase their
full -council meetings to
twice a month.
"This is a - great
opportunity for us to correct
some problems Avith county
council," said Robin
Dunbar, of Grey. Township
• "As everyone goes through
restructuring, now is the
• time for us to try and make.
council more` effective, and
democratic."
The Strategic Planning
Committee is looking at
reconfiguring. county.
committees and asked
countycouncil recentlyto
bring forth their input. The
comtnittcc will also look at
adding a scctm'd-county
council meetingcach month
in-an,effort to increase
awareness and discussion
on important _issues facing
council. :

and Public Works, Planning
and Development, Health
and Seniors. Social and
Cultural Services, and
Administ'ration,,Finance
and Personnel.
With the restructuring of
Huron • municipalities
coming into effect Jan. 1,
2001, the number of county
'councillors, would be
reduced to `about 18. With a'
reduced number of
councillors; a proposal"was
brought before council to
cut back the number of
committees from five to
four. One possible structure
brought before county
council included: planning
and health in one
committee; agriculture,
'roiids and seniors; library
museum and social
services; • and
administration. finance and
personnel.
"I don't feel this is the
time to he .cutting hack
committees with"all that has
been realigned in services,"
said lack Coleman, reeve of
Stanley. He added that he
felt reducing the number of
committees could bring
with it more work on the
committees.
"What's before you is just
a proposal," said Laurie
Cox, reeve of Goderich
Township. Cox added that
the Strategic Planning
Committee hoped a new
council format would bring
more open discussion on•
issues facing council. He
noted that having an extra
council meeting each month
would allow the councillors
to become better informed.
Dunbar noted that the•hbt
issues facing council, such
as police and ambulance,
would be better dealt with
by the whole council rather
than by one committee. '
"As we go into the next
year, the people of the
county will have a lot less
representation," said Mason
Bailey. reeve of Blyth. "We
can compensate that to
some degree by being more
open to the public."
Bruce Machan, reeve of
Wingham, noted his town
council moved to a two -
meetings a month' format
which proved to be
beneficial inkeeping the
councillors better informed
on the issues.

THANKS TO OUR
LANDOWNERS
Throughout the OFSC trail system, generous landowners allow the
winter use of their property for the enjoyment of snowmobiling. This
land use privilege is crucial to the existence of the snowmobile trails
which provide many social, recreational and economic benefits to our
entire province. Without the continuing cooperation of these unselfish
friends of snowmobiling, the quality of winter life throughout our
area would be significantly diminished.
We ask everyone in Ontario, but especially snowmobilers and those
who benefit directly from snowmobiling, to say a special thanks to
our landowners for the use of their property again this season.
Thank you from
PINERIDGE SNOWMOBILE
