Catholic board looking hard at uniforms.

Special to The Huron Expositor
Despite what looked like a
ringing endorsement from
staff and parents of St.
Anne's Catholic Secondary
School in Clinton, trustees
of the Huron -Perth Catholic
District School Board say
they'll make serious
considerations before
approving the adoption of
student uniforms at the
Clinton school.
At a regular board
meeting Monday, Feb. 28,
the St. Anne's principal,
vice-principal and chair of
the School Council's
subcommittee on the issue
all provided reasons for
approving uniforms. But
following their presentation,
trustee Vincent McInnes
was less than supportive.
"It's a contentious item,"
McInnes said. "I don't think
it's one that I'm going to
take on lightly."
Acting vice-principal John
McCarroll showed results
from a vote on uniforms,
conducted amongst St.
Anne's staff as well as
parents and students from
the high school and Grades
7 and 8 students from all
schools feeding into St.

Anne's. Staff and parents
approved 88 per cent -and 70
per cent, respectively, and
elementary students were
also generally in favor.
But St. Anne's students
came down 58 per cent
opposed. leaving the total
student vote slightly against
the change.
School Council
subcommittee chair John
Anderson, parent of a St.
Anne's student, told trustees
some Grades Il and 12
students opposed uniforms
because they found it unfair
they should purchase new
clothing for just one or two
years of schooling. McInnes
said he agreed with this
concern. But he also noted a
substantial portion of
younger students also
opposed the move.
,With an issue like this. if
you're at a 50/50 split, the
ones that have said 'no' are
going to be a definite 'no.'
The ones that have said 'yes'
might be a little less'
definite," McInnes said.
In offering reasons for the
adoption of uniforms.
principal Phillip McMillan
said the main goal is to
provide St. Anne's students
with a distinct identity'
within the Huron -Perth
hoard and beyond. He also
said uniforms help put all
students. regardless of
social or financial standing.
at the same level.
"Vanity, envy and
predisposition of character
based on appearance are
negative influences in our
society, and I think uniforms
address those ,issues,"
McMillan said.
However, both he and
McCarroll admitted
discipline and safety are
also concerns. McCarroll
described a recent parent
meeting on the issue, when
he asked a senior student to
walk on stage wearing the
recently -popular cargo -style
pants. which feature
numerous pockets. Those
pockets concealed every
discipline -related item
McCarroll had confiscated
so far this year. including
"knives. King CansApt*
beer). regular -sided
beers and various drug
paraphernalia. none of
which are permitted in our
school."
McCarroll added St.
Anne's is growing. making
it easier for non -students to
enter the school without
standing out. He says
uniforms would address the
possibility of outside
troublemakers. as well as
other discipline problems.
"We do have issues (11
truancy in our school. We
have issucs of weapons and
we have issucs of drugs.
There is violence towards
teachers and other students.
And we think that a uniform
would work to address
that."
Following the meeting.
board chair Bernard Murray
agreed the -issue merited
serious consideration by
trustees. He added he
expects a vote as early as
the next regular meeting in
late March.
