Father Devereaux was ordained at St. Peter's Basilica in London on Saturday. March 4 by Bishop Sherlock. Thc first solemn Mass was sung by Father Devereaux completely in Latin. along with the seminarians who chanted the parts of the Mass in St. Columban Gregorian Chant. A reception and'social Hollowed in St. Jams School where Father Devereaux gave many his first priestly blessing. Father Devereaux was joined by his parents. Jen Preston and Katic Bateman -were joined by Adam Houben giving an interesting and informative talk about their experiences participating in the poverty awareness trip to the Dominican Republic. The group included members from St. Columhan, St. Public speaking winners chosen Seaforth Legion News The Zone Cl level public speaking contest was held last Saturday at Scaforth Branch 156. The colours were marched on by the colour party Judy Poland and Mary Becker with Jim Brown acting Sgt. -at - Arms. Deputy Zone CI Commander Bob Grey was in charge of the opening ceremonies. Zone Youth Education Chairman Bonnie Lafontane welcomed the contestants and parents and introduced visiting officials. • . Grades 7-8 had 13 contestants, the winners being first, Lisa -Grant of Wingham: second, Justin Boucher and third. Totiya Prost. of .Clinton. in Grades 1 I -OAC. first place went to Graham Worsell of Goderich and second place to Carotin Van Sligtenhorst, of Clinton. Lunch was served; by the Ladies Auxiliary for the judges, and Legion s•isitors.-The children and parents were served coffee. cold drinks and cookies while the judges reviewed results` After lunch. '.12.contestants spoke in the story telling. Winners from Grade 3 included first place, Thomas Murray, of Mitchell: second place. Brittany Bcnjiman, of Blyth and third_place, Dalton Delislc. of Wingham. • Thirteen contestants spoke in the,Grades 4-6 class and winners included first. Emily Van Bakel of Seaforth, second, Jeff.Ellion. of Blyth and third was Alex Van Drunen. of Mitchell. First place winners now go on to the District contest. = Thc judges were Eva Brown. Brenda McIntosh, John Fisher and Auleen Thenault.,Timekeeper was Dick Burgess. Congratulations to all.the contestants. The Zone Cl convention is being held on March 12 at the Blyth Legion. The March executive meeting is at 7:30 p.m. on March 9. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. St. Columban students enjoy Quebec City trip On Feb. 13. the Grade 7: and Of St. Columban School boarded the bus fdr Quebec City where we spent' toour tun -filled days - ` ex -Waring and learning about this spectacular city. • - The first day started with the I I -hour bus ride which . began at 6 a.m.. - The first'night we went to. C:pper Town for dinner at Lc Petite Italie. or in English.' Little Italy. After dinner we were able to see Le Chateau Frontcnac all lit up and we had a wonderful view of the St. Lawrence River.' We then , • enjoyed the Quebec Experience: a multisensory, multi -media trip into, Quebec's history•. Thc walking tour of Upper Town began. We were astonished and awe-struck as ,we came upon the huge ice palace and all of the -amazing icesculptures that !lad been carved by some veryialented people. • On Feb. 14,we went on .another walking tour, but this time of Lower Town. We then visited the Basilica Notre -Dame -de -Quebec and saw the crypts of Governor .Frontcnac and most of the Bishops of Quebec. Next. we headed to the Stoneham Ski Resort, the third largest ski resort in the province ofQuebec, where we enjoyed an afternoon of downhill skiing.. Many of the hills took 20 to 30 minutes to ski down. For supper, we enjoyed a French -style meal at Aux Anciens Canadians. After dinner we walked to Bistro Plus where we danced the night away. We spent the morning Feb. 15 at La Base de Plein- . air do Sainte -Foy where we .enjoyed -many activities such as tubing. ice fishing, cross- country skiing and hroomball. We also Went to Les Gaieties de la Capitate, a mallwith an ice rink, a roller - coaster, bumper cars, an imax theatre and hundreds of stores. - , After we were all done our shopping we drove back up to Upper Town wherewe were given a tour of Le Chateau Frontenac. When the tour was -over we were given the chance to go on the big ice slides. The slides were fantastic and everyone loved them. For dinner that night we ate at a Sugar Shack. There we enjoyed folk dancing, a wagon ride. and a traditional taffy. pull. On Feb. 16. we awoke at 6 a.m. and packed our bags. We enjoyed our last meal in Quebec City at the Flash Cafe before we had to leave for home. Thc ridc seemed shover on the way home, and once again everyone had lots' to say, O is time about how much w2 loved the trip and how we didn't want to leave Quebec. We arrived back home at 8:30 p.m. and we. were all greeted by our parents. . Although happy to be home, we all miss Quebec. It was a wonderful experience. it taught us about different cultures and -different languages. Thc trip was absolutely excellent and it gives younger children something to look forward to in the future. Welcome back to Dianna and Wayne Miller, who have returned from a holiday in Florida. They enjoyed the sights and sounds of Disney World in Orlando. Students at St. Columhan School prcitnoted awareness of the environment with a "Green Day." A prize was given to the pet sou 'a ho wore the most• green clouting. The pupils were encouraged to bring"a "littcrless" lunch with a prize for the class who had the least litter.
