Newly -formed teen band gives local musicians chance to perform By Susan Hundertmark Expositor Staff For some, it's something to do on a Monday night and for others: it's one more step towards the dream of becoming a professional musician. - But whatever their goals, local young musicians now have an opportunity to perform the music they love with Insert- Name Here, a newly -formed teen band that practices weekly at Egmondville United Church.. Organized by local music teacher and musician Kim Souch, -the hand brings together many of her students who, despite years of private Lessons, haven't had the chance to: work in a hand with other musicians. "There are a lot of kids around who have all these skills in music but have never had to use them: If you put a piece of sheet music in front of them, they can play it. but when it comes to improvising and blending their music together, they haven't had that chance," says Souch. "It's a cool feeling to work together as 'a band and to find out it actually sounds good. It's awesome," says Kassie Hoegy, a Grade 11 student who's been taking vocal lessions for nine years. Kassie, who says she's known as the "Oh Canada girl"• at school -because of her frequent performances of the national anthem at local hockey games, -says she'd like to become a professional singer. "If it happens. it .happens," she says. Sarah Broadfoot, who plays keyboard and sings with -the band. says playing with Insert Name Here is more fun than playing clarinet with her high-school concert band in Clinton. And. while she's just achieved her Grade 9 in piano and plans to teach piano. Sarah says she'd also like to write her own songs and make a tape. • "Everything I've written so far stinks, though," she laughs. Curtis Smith and Lorraine Blake are both taking guitar lessons. from .Souchand say they're happy to have an outlet forall the practising they're doing for lessons. !Curtis, who used to be in a church choir and•has been taking guitar lessons for three years, says the band is "something to do for fun." Lorraine. who hopes to end HP in a band that plays in clubs when she leaves home for college in the fall, says she's stili a little nervous singing in front of people. -I've learned.more with the band than I do at my music - lessons, '`she says. Trevor Zaple and Wayne Babineau, who have also formed their own hand called Canopy Jar, have been playing guitar and writing song's for five years. .The two-havebeen friends since Grade 3. When Trevor began taking guitar lessons,a began teaching Wayne, who has never taken a formal lesson. `'i just ignored- the theory and learned how to play the songs." says Wayne, who adds he has a natural ability to play many instruments by ear including guitar, drums, banjo. mandolin and violin. . "I'm never really .good'at there but through trial and error I've found f can;play them." he says. Wayne Nought a bass guitar a year ago after mooning over it for weeks ina Main Street store window acros-s the street from his part-time job at Becker's. While they both write. songs - "all about death and destruction. We still can't write love songs," says Wayne - Trcvor says he's never without his song -writing notebook. He's filled 1d notebooks of songs and writes songs at school hoard meetings, which he attended during the school closure process and through math class at Seaforth District High School where he and Wayne are in Grade 12. Trevor has been -inspired to write songs about the fight to keep Seaforth's high school open and what he sees as the lack of representation local people are receiving from trustees. "Here arc nine people who are supposed to be our voice and somehow there's a missing connection between the brain and the vocal chord.." he says. adding the chorus of the song goes. -Wake up. you have a choice. Wake up. you have a voice.' Both have dreams of becoming rock musicians, going on tour and meeting famous people and say they leapt at .thc chance to join a local band. "We couldn't wait until the band started. Music is my life. I wrote a song about my guitar and it sort of sounds like I'm writing about a girl." says Wayne. ' I can't see myself doing -anything else. I don't have the right temperament for a regular job." says Trevor. Trevor came up with the name of his and Wayne's band Canopy—lar after taking a history course on ancient Egypt when he discovered that a canopy jar was used to store the internal organs of people who were mummified. The group is also planning to find other performance opportunities during the summer and might compete in the Western Fair's talent competition. - "I'd like this band to become something like the (Scatorth All -Girls) marching band. I'd like it to become one more creative outlet for kids in the community," says Souch. She says new members arc always -welcome and a drummer is particularly needed.
