Tanya Hallam gives Isabelle Shortreed a message, part of program Huron County retirement
homes are looking at for their residents.
Massage therapy gives
seniors physical contact
• For, more than a year
now, residents of Seaforth
._ Manor Ntirsing Home have
been enjoyingthc services
of a registered massage.
.therapia.
Tanya Hallam who has
been providing the
services. spoke to a group
of administrators of arca
nursing homes who met at
• the . Manor last week,
regarding the benefits of
implementing programs
like this in long term care
• facilities.
"Massage -Therapy helps
seniors in much the same
way as it does the general.
population." says Hallam.
"It improves -flexibility
sand co-ordination,• reduces
pain and stiffness.
decreases risk of injury
from falls, deepens and
lengthens sleep, increases
energy and elevates mood
and a sense of well-being."
Tanya, who also
operates a massage therapy
f clinic in Clinton, says -she
believes a person cannot
feel good about themselves
when everything aches.
Many aches and pains in
seniors are due to the
build-up of toxins in the
tissue which arc not being
efficiently removed - by the
blood and lymph systems.
Massage therapy improves
that circulation
tremendously, which will
improve tissue health,
helping to heal or prevent:
skin break -down.
Cheryl Phillips, Director
of Programs at the Manor.
says the massage therapy
program _ has been
extremely welt-receivedby
thc residents and their
families as well as the staff
and the • medical
community.
"Wc have a lot of frail
'elderly who are unable to
participate in other
activities and this was our
primary focus for starting
the program." says
Phillips. "We work very
closely with the' nursing
staff and•the doctor so that
we can assess needs and
refer residents for the
massage program. We also
leave a couple of time slots
open each week so that
other residents may have a
massage as a "treat from
their regular routine."
Isabelle Shortrecd had
been receiving messages at
home for a .couple years
before coming to the
Manor about a month ago,
She is a cancer survivor
and finds medications
don't help as much as a
message with the regular
pain she experiences.
"This isn't a`cure but it
helps with the pain," she
said.
It makes the constant
discomfort easier to take
and relaxes her.
Hallam emphasizes that
another important benefit
is the "hands-on touch."
Some seniors receive
very little .physical contact
in theirlater years and
human touch is essential to
one's health and comfort.
Seaforth Manor is one of
the first area nursing
homes to have a registered
passage; therapist on staff.
There is no cost to the
residentsfor this program.
For the general public,-
OHIP does not cover the
cost of a massage, but
many extended health-care
plans do. Hallam also said
that Veterans Affairs -
Canada will pay for twenty
massage therapy sessions
per year.
