FINANCIAL ADVICE
FINANCIAL PLANNING STRATEGIES FOR YOUR FUTURE
Personal Tax Tips
There.are a few tax break opportunities for the employee
of a business. We will explore expenses paid to perform
your employment duties.
Do you purchase goods or services for business pur-
poses? You may have an opportunity to reduce your tax-
able income by preparing a statement of employment
expenses (form T777). This may be available if your pur-
chases are not fully reimbursed by your employer.'
Some eligible expenses' include automobile expenses,
meals and tips and work space in home expenses.
'Allowable automobile expenses include operating
costs. financing chargesor leasing costs and capital cost •
allowance. Thee are prorated based on the kilometres dri
seen to'earn-employment income overthe total kilometres
driven in the year. It is important to keep receipts and log
business and total kilometres driven.
If you,buy meals for clients as part of your employ-
ment duties. you are eligible to claim 50Ic ofthe meal and
tip as an expense of employment. Keep your receipts and
record the purpose of the meal. ' Work space in home expenses are available only if
•
•
you meet the restrictions. The work space must be where
you principally perform your employment duties or it is ,
used exclusivelyon a regular and continuous basis for
meeting people while performing your employment duties:
These can be onerous to overcome unless your activities
are well planned. Mortgage interest and capital•cost
allowance are specifically excluded. "
To be able to use the above entitlements. it is manda-
tory that you have your employer certify that these expens.
es were required as part of your employment. Revenue
Canada has a "Declaration of conditions of employment"
form (T2200) available specifically for this purpose.

to an RRSP.'
RRSPs help reduce your •
taxes because you can
deduct the amount of your
RRSP contribution from
your taxable income. As.
well; your RRSP will grow
in value, without attracting
tax.. allowing you to save
for retirement. The theory is
that by the time you need to
draw funds from your
RRSP, your income will be
lower, and the withdrawals
will be taxed at a lower
rale.
Mint is the deadline to con- .
