French immersion set to go 'in Stratford
Forty-one Grade i and 2 students
enrolled in new Avon Maitland
program beginning in September
By Susan Hundertmark

Forty-one Grade 1 and 2 students are so far enrolled in
French immersion classes, which begin September at
Stratford's Bedford Public School.
"It looks very promising. You have to understand how keen
the parents arc to see this program have a beginning."
superintendent Marie Parsons told trustees of the Avon
Maitland District School Board at their Feb. 8 meeting.
Registration for the new program closed Feb. I I and
Parsons said the two teachers needed for French immersion
Were expected to be hired by the beginning of this week.
Parsons said the willingness of the board to guarantee that
younger siblings will be given a spot at Bedford Public
School and to provide busing inside the city of Stratford made
the difference in attracting enough students to offer the
program. An attempt to begin French immersion last year
failed when busing was not offered.
"I couldn't sec more than one bus needed in ` iratford and
for thc Mitchell and St. Marys students enrolled. the parents
know they need to drive them," she said.
When trustee Maggie Laprade asked how many students the
French immersion program attracted to the Avon Maitland
board who would have otherwise gone elsewhere. Parsons
said only one parent specified that without French immersion.
she would have registered in thetatholic system.
"It would be just speculation on any of the others." she said.
Parsons added that since the local Catholic board's French
immersion program teaches every course in French. opposed
to the Avon Maitland program, which teaches math and
English in English, the difference could attract more students
to the Avon Maitland board.
"There are inquiries," she said.
