With one game left in the regular season, Derek Nesbitt and Scott Henderson, who arc playing for the Sarnia Steeplejack Bees. are fighting for second place overall in the league. Sarnia moved into second place on Jan. 30 in a game against their cross-town rivals the Petrolia Jets. There was no scoring in the game until the third period when Petrolia took a one -goal lead at 1:18 into the period. Sarnia tied the score with a goal by Rodney Richard. with 26 seconds left in the game. Sarnia won the game in an overtime shootout that saw 13 players from each team shooting for the win. The final score of the game was 2-1. "It's always a big game when they play Petrolia. Some of the guys from both teams go to school together. so they always play a little harder," said Derek's father Graham Nesbitt. Both teams played a very physical' game. which resulted in a lot of. penalties being assessed. Sarnia was trying to make up for their last game against Petrolia,- which they lost 5-4 in a shootout_ "We had too many penalties in the game and we couldn't capitalize on our powerplays. " said Nesbitt. - Henderson did not play because of a sore shoulder from a hit that he received the game before against London. He left the game early after being hit by one of the London players. Henderson was ready for their next game though, which was against Leamington. "My shoulder isn't real had. it is just a little sore. I'll Buck N Doe• for • PETER TERPSTRA and 1.6. Henderson has been playing very ,well lately and says he feels he is becoming more comfortable playing hockey in Sarnia. It isn't the same for Nesbitt though. who has an amazing 63 points already this year in 50 games but has been slowing down a bit recently. "Derek's in a bit of a goal slump. It's kind of funny because he is being very superstitious about it. He has changed the colour of the tape on his stick, and he is also wearing his old skates now." said Derek's father. Derek is hoping the slump won't last too long. so he will be playing well in the playoffs. As of now. Sarnia would play Petrolia in the playoffs. but the standings are so close with the final three teams. London, Petrolia: and Tecumseh. that it could go. either way. "If I had to choose I would rather play. Tecumseh. We beat them 8-0 in our last game against them. They just really didn't show up. We would likely havea good series against them." said Nesbitt. While Henderson and Nesbittlire playing on a good team this year in Sarnia. the same cannot be said for Adam Leonhardt and Mark Glanville. who started the year with St. Marys Lincolns. who are in last place.. Leonhardt started off the season slow. scoring only three points in 34 games. He has been playing very well lately though. and is showing that he deserves a spot on the Lincolns team. Leonhardt's season will he over after his last two games against Aylmer on Feb. 12 and 13. Glanville's season has already come to an end. which was the result of an .injury that he received to his leg while playing in a regular season game for St. Marys.
