"At this stage-. it's a safety factor." said Clinton and Seaforth Staff Sergeant George Lonsbary, explaining there hasn't been a problem with drivers endangering children but that the cones are there to help make it less likely to happen. The cone. an orange traffic pylon, Contains a stop sign and handle for the guard to carry it into the street. As guards cross the street. they place the cones in the centre of the first lane they have crossed while continuing to use their hand- held stop sign to guide children across the second lane. picking up the pylons on their way back across. once the children are safely on the other side. "I'm not aware of any specific problems with the crossings in Seaforth," said Lonsbary. But he said people have a tendency to proceed through the crossing before the guard has cleared the intersection. The guard will have the children safely' into the opposite lane and Lonsbary said some drivers will go ahead through the crossing. The intent is to place the. cone in the lane the crossing guard is not in to stop those people, said Lonsbary.
