New stop
signs help
children
at crossings

Crossing guards are using
a new tool to help them keep
children safe as they cross
Highway 8 to Seaforth Public
School and St. James School.
"At this stage-. it's a
safety factor." said Clinton
and Seaforth Staff Sergeant
George Lonsbary, explaining
there hasn't been a problem
with drivers endangering
children but that the cones
are there to help make it less
likely to happen.
The cone. an orange traffic
pylon, Contains a stop sign
and handle for the guard to
carry it into the street.
As guards cross the street.
they place the cones in the
centre of the first lane they
have crossed while
continuing to use their hand-
held stop sign to guide
children across the second
lane. picking up the pylons
on their way back across.
once the children are safely
on the other side.
"I'm not aware of any
specific problems with the
crossings in Seaforth," said
Lonsbary.
But he said people have a
tendency to proceed through
the crossing before the guard
has cleared the intersection.
The guard will have the
children safely' into the
opposite lane and Lonsbary
said some drivers will go
ahead through the crossing.
The intent is to place the.
cone in the lane the crossing
guard is not in to stop those
people, said Lonsbary.
The concern is that while
the guard has his or her back
to that part of the road as the
