- Fall fairs threatened by grant cuts
doing.- he said of the
changes the . provincial
government is making.
The provincial..gOvernment
is also looking at changes to
Bill 66 which all agricultural
societies fall under.
Bill 66 currently states any
agricultural societies who
own buildings and land are
exempt from .paying
commercial and property tax
to local municipalities. •
The government may
revoke that section of the bill.
Fifty-one per cent of
agricultural societies in
Ontario own their own land
and facilities including
Seaforth.
Floyd said until the society
knows more. it is difficult to
predict how. the Iocal society
- will be affected.. •
District 8 held an
emergency . meeting in
Seaforth last week to outline
the anticipated changes with
Fry as one of the speakers.
"It was to give out
information, Said Young.
A 10 -page questionnaire
was distributed to societies to
help describe their situations
and needs whose data Young
said will .take special
meetings to.prepare so it can
be given to OAAS as it
prepares to meet 'with
OMAFRA to talk about the
situation.
Huron Bruce MPP Helen
Johns said no final decisions
have been made on what will
be cut from OMAFRA's
budget.
It's pan of a reorganizing
the province is doing with
OMAFRA to save $5.2
million from its annual
budget. a topic Deputy

"1 "dont - think .the

Minister of Agriculture.
Frank Ingratta brought up
briefly at a -recent meeting in
Seaforth with the agricultural
community. It was held to
explain the changes taking
place with the announced
closure of provincial
OMAFRA offices including
the one in Clinton.-
"I obviously wouldn't be in
favour of cutting agricultural
horticultural societies'
budgets," said Johns.
Horticultural societies face
losing a percentage of their
$1,000 grants.
"I think it is good for the
government to review. .its
grants. That way, we can
make sure the groups are still
providing the proper services
to the community," said
Johns.
For fall fairs, the grants'are
a major contribution toward
the prize money given out.
-Young said the grant each
society is given is based on a
percentage of the prize
money given out at the fair.
She said losing that money
will threaten some of the.
- fairs.
• By losing the grant. Floyd
doesn't.expect to see the
• Seaforth fair threatened.
He did not know the
amount of Seafdrth's grant
and OMAFRA's Clinton
office won't release that
