St. Patrick's Church in Dublin begins celebrations
for its tooth anniversary, this weekend
By Tim Cumming
Mitchell Advocate Staff
The year 2000 is not only the
'millennium year' it's also the
Centennial Year for St. Patrick's Roman
Catholic Church in Dublin.
The Centennial celebrations have
been in the planning stages for almost
two years and will include six events
during the new year.
On Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, from 12-4
p.m., St.• Patrick's will celebrate a
Centennial Levee. Parishioners are
already at work on historical family
displays to be shown at the Levee. The
event will begin with remarks from
dignitaries and will later includean
informal open -house atmosphere. The
Levee will also feature entertainment
including children's choirs and old-time
music. People will be invited to speak
from the floor about their ancestors and
history in the parish, if they wish,
according to Margaret Rowland, co-
chair of the Centennial Celebrations
along with Pauline Hartf-iel, of Mitchell.
The Centennial Levee will also
feature multicultural dishes to reflect
the contributions of many people to the
parish.
"We want to recognize the different
cultures that have come up through the
parish," said Rowland.
Centennial events will be listed on a
sign in front of the church.
On March 19, there will be a St.
Patrick's spiritual and social day.
On May 28, the church will hold a re-
dedication of the cornerstone of the
church, which was laid on May 27,
1900.
The church will host a Homecoming
Weekend from July 1-2, including the
raffle draw. The Saturday family day,
from 2-7 p.m. will feature children's
games, music and visiting. On Sunday
morning at 10:30 Bishop John Michael
Sherlock will celebrate a special
Centennial mass with the Parish. A
dinner will take place at 1 p.m. at
Mitchell District Community Centre.
On Sept. 17 there will be a Cemetery
Sunday recognizing those buried in the
cemetery, especially the church
founders.
On Nov. 19, a Memorial Consecration
Day will be the final event of the
Centennial year. It will mark the
consecration of St. Patrick's Church
which took place on Nov. 25, 1900.
The Centennial events will honour the
100th anniversary of the establishment
of the parish.
"We're just kind of reliving it a bit,"
said Rowland.
