Anita Kreurz►s•iser. Renee Nash. Tiler VanderMolen. Darid Verherne Advent Celebration: Nov. 29 we had our first Advent celebration of the season in the school gym. Students from Grades 6 and 2 took an active part in presenting the symbols of the Advent wreath and their meaning and then; created the school Advent wreath. Thelirst candle was lit to symbolize thc first week of Advent and each Monday for the next three weeks. thc school will gather together, light the Advent wreath and reflect on the coming of Christmas. Advent is a period of simple living and extra prayer. It is a time in our church to prepare for the coming of Jesus. our saviour. We look forward to the upcoming Advent celebrations. Student Council: The Student Council at St. James School has just recently arranged a hat day. The winners were: Kindergarten: Megan Bedard, Logan . Bruxer and Kcshia Feeney. Grade 1: Jessica McClure, - Rachel .Askett and Dylan Bruxcr. Grade 2: Brandon Van Dyk: Brent Melady and Matt Nigh. Grade 3: Ryan O'Reilly. Katelin Nolan and Katie McGregor.. Grade 4: Kacie McClure. Kelly Verherne and Jordan Nobel. tirade 5: Lindsay Nash, Anthony Nolan and Jessica DcJong. Grade 6: Tara O'Reilly: Jaime Price and Melissa Marion. Grade 7: . Brett Van Dyk and Kali McMahon: Grade 8: Garrett Van Dieten. Cal O'Reilly and Megan Carnochan. Teacher: Mr. Van Bakel. The Student Council also arranged the loonie drive. Each studentbrings in a loonie and the Student Council will buy some gifts for the Huron County Christmas Bureau. St. James School is also encouraging every student to bring in a non-perishable food item for the local Food Bank. - Kindergarten: Throughout this past month. the kindergarten's have been .studying homes and animals. In their homes. thcy arc discussing what furniture goes in what rooms and %+hich room in theirhouse is. their favourite. Most of the . children chose their .. ` bedroom. In their study_ of ` -anirtials-thcy'talked about animal homes. . The children have•talked about the weather and the • different seasons. The kindergartens are learning about lines of symmetry. On. Remembrance Day the kids talked about how lucky they are to live in Canada and the freedom we have. All of the students are looking forward to Christmas and they are all getting excited about the Christmas cor .ng up on Dec. 14. Grade 1 1. class is working na n turning how to count money and in a couple weeks, will be setting up a small store in the classroom where they pretend to buy items with play money. Congratulations go out to the Grade 1 s for they have - just read 1.000 books. The class celebrated with punch, cupcakes and games. The children are learning about buildings and are enjoying ETM (education through music) in the gym with Mrs. Hugill. Grade 2: The Grade 2 class is reading books about chocolate. Some of the books have been Chocolate Fever and Chocolate Touch. The students all made stories on travelling with the computer program,'Story Book Weaver. The stories included how they travelled and where they went. The Grade. 2s are presently working on adding and subtracting in math class. Grade 3: The Grade 3 students are having fun preparing their Legend of the Candy Canes for the upcoming Christmas concert, and writing Christmas recipes. For the festive season. all of the students are wearing red and green. In social studies. theft' have also created their own cities made out of blocks, boxes. toothpicks and other different types of materials. To go with the cities. they have made a brochure describing them. ' Grade 4: The Grade 4 class would like to say welcome to their new teacher, for two weeks. Mrs. Stapleton. Since it is close to Christmas many Christmas activities are going on. In French, they are doing the Nativity Scene play. Also they are working. on Christmas stories, poems and Christmas art, which includes. stained glass pictures. Grade Five: Grade 5 _ partisipated.in a mini- - - - - Olympics day. It was a lot of fun and maybe there are some future medal winffers among them. The Grade 5 class has begun a science study segment on forces. The students are busy preparing for the Christmas pageant. Grade Six: Grade 6 students are soon to be authors and illustrators of their own children's Christmas books. In physical education. they are having fun doing alt kinds of dancing. There has been sothe great input in the Legion poster contests. and the Y2K competition. The students are also busy with many types of Christmas arts and crafts. In science, a new unit has begun on the diversity of living things. The class is preparing for the Christmas Mass, which they are helping to plan. Grade Seven: The Grade 7 class at St. James School would like to welcome Chris Van Bakel, a student teacher, who will be helping the class for the next two weeks. Mr. Van Bakel has already spent the last 2 weeks with the class. He has been a great help to Ms. Wild and is doing a great job. The Grade 7s are currently working on a science unit called 'The Earth's Crust.' Studying different layers of the earth, different types of rocks and making nanaimo bars have all been part of this unit. Why make nanaimo bars? you ask. Nanaimo bars are a perfect example of how to demonstrate the different layers of sedimentary rock that is found at the bottom of bodies of salt water. The class was also granted permission to eat the tasty treats after comparing them to real sedimentary rock. Ms. Wild's class has also been busy with their morning Advent prayers. The teachers and students are all looking forward to the upcoming second term. Grade 8: Two guests from Junior Achievement of London came to the school on Dec. 1 to talk to the Grade 8 class about the "Economics of Staying in School:" The students learned about living on their own and the costs of living. They learned what it would be like to drop out of school and get.a job or to stay in school and go to college or university. The students played gamesand did activities about budgeting and discussed how they would live for a month based on the expenses. Grade 8 Retreat: On Nov. -9th, the Grade 8s travelled to St. Columban to take part in a retreat to prepare themselves for Confirmation. • December calendar filled with Christmas parties The Christmas season is fast approaching. The final Christmas of the 20th century. Alt of.our residents look forward to the new 'millennium. They also hold treasured • memories of our past. We hope that everyone had a chance to come. out to our Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale on Nov. 13. We were pleased to see . many familiar faces. It was also wonderful to visit during our euchre party on Nov. 18. Please plan to attend our Christmas euchre Seaforth Manor Retirement Home • party Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. in the Retirement Home. We have many activities planned during the month of December. They include the staff and resident get-together on Dec. 21. carolling Dec. 14. wine and cheese party Dec. 23 and -New Year's party Dec, 30. We welcome Neil and Anna Lowey to the Retirement Home this month. Happy Birthday to Jean Hildebrand, George Wright. Teresa Feeney and Marg Daynard. --�i:�caih��IIsreiirizis scs - for Remembrance Day contest The Annual Legion Children's Christmas Seaforth Legion News Concert was held Sunday. Once again the children participating in the concert did very well These were: Melissa Pushelberg. Jenna Chappel and Laura Chappel. Katie Reid and Adam Elliott. Robin Doig. Paul Doig, Nathanial Bakker. Benjamin and Zackaria Bakker, Victoria Cardiff. Audrey Chambers and Teresa Bakker. President Linda Gridrak welcomed everyone on behalf of Branch 156.. Allyson Cardiff led everyone in singing Christmas songs.and welcomed Santa Claus with the singing of Jingle Bells. Santa Claus then gave each child a big bag with apple, orange and candy. Coffee and cookies were served by the ladies. Last week Youth Education Chairman. Charles Perkins and Barbara Scott, PRO visited the three local schools to present the certificates and prize money to the students who placed 1st. 2nd and 3rd in thc • Poems, Posters. black and white and coloured and essays Remembrance contest. First place entries have been forwarded to the Zone level contest. Tickets are still available for the New Year's Eve party. Get your tickets right away. The General Meeting will be held on Thursday, December 16 at 8 p.m. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. The retreat was, given by Gary Beauchesne from Servant Retreat Training Centre in Straffordville. While in St. Columban thc students of St. James, Seaforth and St. Joseph of Clinton took part in playing many different games and activities involving what preparations and knowledge they would need for Confirmation. "It was interesting and fun and I think we all learned a lot." says Lori Van Bakel. after taking pan in the event. Confirmation: On Nov. 20, 22 students from St. James School were confirmed at St. James Church along with 19 students from other area schools. They had a group picture taken by Frank Phillips in the school gym before the Mass. All 41 kids should be proud of the dramatic step that they took in the house of Christ. After the confirmation Mass,. family and friends as well as other people in the congregation went to the school for coffee and juice. The Bishop also had his picture taken individually with the kids_who were confirmed. Sports: Right now. sc have started House League Volleyball. We have four different teams that consist of about 10 to 12 per team. The first tryouts for our senior boy's and girl's teams will be later in the week. I'm very confident that both teams will be strong and that they will have god potential at the volleyball tournament coming up at St. Anne's in Clinton. xtended Hours For Christmas Thursday.
