The first eye donation in a push by local doctors to
Contribute to the Eye Bank of Canada received a police
escortto Kitchener late last month.
The donor eyes. from an unnamed deceased person in
Seaforth area, will go ter -the eye hank in Toronto where
there is a critical shortage of donated eyes for corneal
transplants.
"We've been trying to encourage local physician: -tri ask
the family of the deceased for donations since a speaker
from the eye. hank gave a talk at the Seaforth.hospital in
..the spring.' says Dr. Carolyn Shepherd. •
• Shepherd says there is always a need for donor eyes.
• whose cornea is used to restore sight and improve the
"quality of life of people suffering from diseases or injuries
of the cornea. • • •

-The cornea is the glassy part of the eye located over the
oris or coloured part of the eye.
Fides Colorna, manager of the Eye Bank of Canada.
says the eye hank gets many .letters from both donation
recipients and donor families.. testifying how the eye
donations help.
"Once the donor families hear how the recipients are
doing, they often write to say how•the donation helps with
their grief.- ,he ,ay,. • •
She says she's heentravelling across Ontario for about
a year in a campaign to increase, the number of vie
donations. The eye bank pro%ide,' 100 cornea; a month
for transplant and •Coloma say, there• i.s. a waiting list of
about 500 people in Ontario for cornea transplants.
"It's not an urgent situation. People will not die if. they,.

dramatically improse quality of life People with corneal.
