Canadian inventor.
We also had an exact
duplicate on the Cobalt
bomb, first used to treat
cancer in Victoria Hospital in
London, Ontario...a replica
of the Alouette satellite that
was hailed around the world
as the best. Developed and
built at Shirley Bay, near
Ottawa. And a big hit was a
vehicle called a "Jigger". An
all terrain jeep -like affair that
had large balloon tires and
could travel through swamps
and on water. Through the
kindness of Phil Garret, the
grand old man of Canadian
aviation and the President of
Dehaviland, we had a
Caribou aircraft on display at
the airport in Long
Beach...and / with the
compliments of the Ontario
government we bussed
anyone out who wanted to go
to the a'i'rport for a spin, in
the world's best "Stol", slow
take off and landing cargo
airplane...made in
Downsview, Ontario. Getting
the Caribou was a real
coup...and a bit of a con job,
for we used'it to ferry all the
exhibits to Los Apgeles and
back.
While talking to Beeney I
was leafing through the Los
Angeles paper and my eyes
caught a name on the
masthead. Like the Toronto
Telegram the publisher's
name was Bassett...which
gave me an idea. I called his
secretary at the paper and
asked to speak to him. giving
11Fr my ntame ,and that I was
from the Government "In
Canada." To say I was from
the Government "In Ontario"
would have been more
truthful....but so very
provincial. He came on the
line and surprised me with a
very gracious, "Hello Sir,
what can I do for you."
Now I did lie. For I spoke
in as formal a way as a
Canadian from 'Seaforth
could, and said something
like..."I am executive
assistant to the Minister from
Toronto, Canada, who is
responsible for trade, the
Honourable Fobert
Macaulay." "The minister
asked me to apologize for the
short notice but hoped you
would come to the World
Affairs Council luncheon as
his personal guest ' on
Wednesday, the day after
tomorrow, and sit at the head
table." What did I have to
lose? He politely said he was
honoured to be asked but
would have to call me back.
Then Beeney reminded me
that our boss Macaulay was
the invited guest speaker and
not in charge of picking
people for the head table...but
it worked.
He came, and now
Macaulay lied, mentioning
Mr. Bassett in his speech he
said he knew his paper well,
and thought it was one of the
finest in North America. The
next day we got a lead
editorial in the. Los Angeles
Times saying what a fine
thing it was to foster
increased - trade between
Canada and California. Not
Letter
Agenda procedure
gives public no chance
to persuade trustees
The fa flowing is a letter sent to Avon Maitland District
School Board chair Wendy Anderson requesting a elate to
speak at Tuesdaj''s board meeting to the directors report
proposing local schools he studied for closure. Recently -
changed board policy rkstricts delegations to one meeting a
month during the second meeting of the'month.
Ms. Wendy Anderson, chair, Avon Maitland District
Sctlool Board •
Regarding: Our request to appear as a delegation before
the Board at tonight's meeting. •
Madam Chair:
We understand from others whom have made sititilar
requests to ours that the public will not be allowed to
address the Board tonight. This means the Trustees will
have been isolated from' any public presentations for two
full weeks before they partake in a crucial vote to decide if
the Director's Recommendatioq on school closure is
adopted in whole or in part.
This is a travesty: The Board has mouthed a lot of words
claiming an increased interest in public accountability and
consultation. Yet the list of specific schools to be closed is
released only. one day before -the vote .and -the public are -to
be given no opportunity whatsoever to stand before the.
Board, on the night of the vote, and persuade the Trustees to
follow other paths.
We call on the Trustees to set aside this experimental and
seriously flawed agenda procedure and allow the public a
chance for a hearing on the night of the vote, before
decisions are made. We further call on the trustees to delay
any vote on the Director's Recommendation for at least two
months so that the Huron -Perth community can become
aware of and respond to the Director's Recommendation.
Thank you for your consideration:,

long after Ontario opened an
office in Los Angeles...and
little did I know that a half
dozen years later 1 would be
back to Hollywood. The 17
minute film from the Ontario
Pavilion at Expo 67 in
Montreal won an academy
award: Remember "A Place
to. Stand" and it's theme
music, "Ontar-i-air-i-air-io."
In the early 1960s
Disneyland was North
America's, if not the world's
biggest themepark. A
playground for kids and
equally enjoyed by adults. I.
was no exception. As I
walked around one night
with my mother we stopped
to listen to a small group of
musicians. They were
standing in the open by the
Magic Mountain. The
trumpet player stepped in
front of the group only a
couple of feet from the
strolling cfowd, and not far
from my mother. He was
playing "Cherry"...a
favourite of mine. Mother
leaned over and whispered
"he sounds just like Harry
James." • 1 whispered
back..."he sounds like Harry
James because it is Harry
James."
We spent part of our last
day at CBS 'Television City.
And the nearby farmers
market. It's a bit like bird
watching only it's people
watching. Quick.
look.:..there's Harvey
Corman..and look, there's
Ann Margaret...and quick.
over there. isn't that what's
his name. It is exciting.
We had a quick tour of
Hanna Barberra where
hundreds 'of artists, called
animators, were drawing
endless pictures of the
Flintstones and Yogi Bear to
be used to make cartoons.
(Now the animation is all by
computer). Animation
director Charles "Nick"
Nichols introduced us to
Debbie Reynolds who'was
recording,for a cartoon sound
track. Nick Nichols and my
dad were cousins.
We took the movie lot tour
and watched the Red Sca
part, saw the dam break and
the water rush through the
town towards us...and min.
us by only a couple of feet.
And before the day was
finished we took the bus tour
to see the homes of the .tan.
The day ended with mother
having me take her picture on
the corner under the signs
saying, "Hollymood and
Vine."
The trade show was a big
success. The minister got
great coverage of his speech
both in Los Angeles and hack
home. My mother had the
time of her life...and by the
way - at no cost. to the
taxpayers. And the Air
Canada flight home was
great. What are mothersfor.

And in the four day's what
did you like hest mother:'
Answer. "Pirates of the
Caribbean at Disneyland.
