HomeMy WebLinkAboutHuron Expositor, 1999-11-24, Page 314 -THE HURON EXPOSITOR, November 24, 1999 Sports Curling club adds sheet of ice for one-year trial By Brett Jowitt Expositor Co-op Student It is hoped that the quality of the. Seaforth Curling Club ice is much better this year. because of a decision by the club and its president Keith Siemon, to change the ice from four sheets to three. For a .few years now, members of the. Seaforth Curling Club have been talking about changing the ice but nothing had ever been done. The problem with the ice was that the sheets were not regulation size.. Actual regulation size for curling rings is 12 feet ,while Seaforth rings were always 10 feet. Havuing to adapt to the smaller ice sometimes bothered people coming from other curling clubs. "In previous years the idea ' of changing the ice had always been turned down • when it was brought up at ' any meetings. But the meeting we had last spring just seemed to have a whole ..'new atmosphere. People were interested in changing • the ice," said Siemon. When the idea had been agreed upon, the club then turned to the Ontario Curling Association for its input. "The O.C.A. was glad to see us go to the regulation ice. I think they just felt it' - was time for . us to try something new." said Siemon. When the ice was ready this year on Nov 1. there was' extraroom to put two feet of space'along each wall. to • give people more room to walk down the ice. "We tried to keep the sheets as far. away . from the ' walls as possible," said Siemon. "The rocks shouldn't fall to the walls any more, now that the ice isn't right beside the walls," said Todd Doig. a long-time member of the curling club. When the weather is cold outside, the walls aroundthe ice cannot accomplodate all the cold. Consequently, the ice beside the walls is very hard to control. Any rocks thrown along the 'walls will tend to fall towards the walls. "I felt it was a bit of an advantage curling on the smaller rings. When I went out to other clubs it.waslike 'hey these rings are huge.' It made tpe rings easier to hit," said Doig. Mary Vanden Hengel. who runs the junior program at the curling -club also liked having only three sheets to curl on. '"It is a- lot less hectic having to only watch three ices of kids.. And they still have just as much fun." said Centenaires beat Lucan, join playoffs A win against division- lcading . Lucan • on Wednesday put the Seaforth Centenaires in the final spot for the playoffs. Seaforth was outshot 36- 21 in the. game but managed to pull out a• 5-3 win. in a game that boasted great goaltending by Seaforth- "Chuck Robertson played a'[fieckj'-of-a game in net." said Dave Parsons. Centenaires manager. Jonathan Chambers led the scoring for, Seaforth when he tied the game 1-1 in the second period. Jason Anstett also scored in the second period on a power play goal to go up 2-1. . Lucan tied the game 2-2 with 31 seconds left in the second period. Seaforth managed to tie the game up at 3-3 when Seaforth player Aaron Parsons. who leads the team in scoring at nine. scored in the third. . The game -winning goal was scored by- Jay Baker_ with less than 2 minutes left in the game. Mike Murray scored an empty net 'goal in the third period -to clinch the win. Vanden Hengcl. , Although the ice may have its advantages this year, having only three ices.also brings some setbacks. With only three ices,, the club will have troubles accommodating some tournaments at the club this year. Six teams will he the limit on the ice at once, rather than the usual eight. The smaller number also brings a dilemma with money. Fewer teams will mean less money, a problem for a curling club trying to get new members. "This is basically just 'a one-year trial period for the club. Next spring we will talk about -the ice situation at our meeting. We arc just going to weigh the pros and cons and then make • a decision about .the following year," said Siemon. Ken Cardno, a long-time member of the Seaforth Happy 40' Anniversary Ramona & Jack Matthews Congratulations with our love, Jacqueline, Michael, Matthew, Michael J., and Alicia `,atctl.cafnt ingc aA'ta tt*iage John and Sheron Stadelmann and Jack and Marianna Ryan are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their children, Rhonda Darlene and Joseph Bernard. The wedding will take place at the Saint Ambrose Catholic Church on Saturday, December 4, 1999. Open reception at 9:00 p.m. at the Blyth Community Centre. Curling Club. remembers when it was first built. "It was about 1954 when the club was built here acro.s from the arena. The club got the rafters from the shed at the old. Brucetield Church." said Cardno. The club was built to meet the size of the roof. and as a result; the curling sheets had to be made smaller so four sheets could tit in. Cardno said, "A while ago when the curling club used to be filled with men to curl. It was hard to book ice time. Now, we are struggling•to keep the ice full." "Wc arc always looking for new members." said Siemon. Anyone interested curlers arc invited by Siemon to come out and try it for a few weeks for free. • Brett Jewitt photo Jeff Campbell curls during Men's Night at the Seaforth Curling Club.
