Take Our Kids to Work Day saw Grade 9s
working and learning with their. parents.

11 ani' Grade 9s aren't sure
v hat they want to do when
finished school. "Take Our
Kids to Work. Day" was,a
good opportunity for them to
-find out.
"i know now what career•t
don't want to pursue." said
Shannon Brooker. who .
recently attended /the
Sea forth Co -.operative
Children's Centres as part o-

young•tccn> could find out
what types of job skids they.
may need in the future.

involved wyith the kids. "I
would rather have a job that
is not as busy." said Brooker.
Brooker is among the
estimated 4(u).000 Grade 9s
across Canada who recently
attended work with their
parents as part of the
national program.
In Seaforth. many
businesses such as the
.children's centre. Seaforth
Community Hospital. the.
Seaforth Creamery, and die
Do -It Centre, all took part in
hosting the Grade 9s zind
teaching them about the
workplace..
r "It's a great day for the
kids to coins and sec what
types of jobs they may be
interested in." said Brian
Nigh of the Do -It Centre,:
who had his daughter Amy
ith him. "Even if they do
not enjoy. the job.. at least
they have narrowed down
their choices," he said.
Amy; like some others
students attending.Seaforth
businesses, realized her
father's job was not the one
for her.
"It was better than going
to school." said Amy.
There were some that* did
enjoy the day very much
ho*•ever. and. wanted to -
know more so they could
pursue a jobin that field:
"It was very interesting for
me because I want to maybe
work in a place like.this
some day." said Stacie
Giller: who was with her
mother. Chris. 'at the.
•creamery. Chris Gillr?r
works in customer service at
the creamery.
- "I really enjoyed the lab
and w-atchi'ng the salad
dressing get -made I also,
Amy Nigh works with her.dad, Brian at the Dolt Centre.

biologist and said spending
the day with her mom had
changed her mind. because
she liked working in the lab
so much.
Brent O'Reilly. who was
with his father Greg at the
hospital. :enjoyed seeing all
the different departments at
the hospital. Greg O'Reilly
is a director of support
services at the hospital.
Brent. said "I have had a
good day at the hospital so
far. maybe some day I could
help him (my dad) out here."
"Take Our Kids to Work -
Day" was started in 1994.
and is sponorcd by a •

organization from Toronto, 1
"The whole idea of the

with interactive hands on
work," said Janice Shore,

partnership co-ordinator.
"I think it has a positive
impact on ' every one
involved. Rather then
!having the kids make their
career choices in Grade 12.
itis giving them ideas of
avenues available, starting in.
Grade 9." said Shore.
According to a school
hoard press release. the day
allows the kids to see
different roles'. and .
responsibilities in the
workplace. to engage- in
meaningful dialogue with
their parents and other
caring adults in, the
Workplace. to explore
different carder paths. and to
better understand the link
between education and their
future.
