Payne Stewart will be
remembered in Seaforth
I had not
planned to
write anything
about golf this
week. and like
many people in
the golf
business. was
looking
forward to a bit of a break
over the winter. However.
• the tragedy that took place
last week on the • PGA Tour
prompted me to share a few
thoughts with you. the golf
readers in the Seaforth
community.
On Monday afternoon with
the sun shining and many
local golfers out on the
course.•one of our members
rushed in to inquire as to the
situation on television. At the
time. those in the clubhouse
were unaware of thc events
unfolding in the USA.
Tuning in to find that thc
current US Open Golf
Champion. Payne Stewart.
was on a "runaway" jet, kept
us glued to the coverage long
after the confirmation was
received that Payne and five
others were dead.
Shock followed and tears
flowed. As we watched thc
almost eerie replays of
Payne's victory in June, it
was impossible to believe
that this grinning, mist
• personable, player was dead.
Many golfers phoned us to
ask -if we had heard. Many •
inquired as to whether we
knew Payne. We did..
Payne Stewart had never
been to Seaforth, but he
knew where Seaforth was
and several•Seaforthians.
Each will remember Payne
in a different way. Each
reflected on his contact with
Payne and then held on to
- the memory to keep
forever....that connection to a .
i .true professional and
champion.
It was difficult to tell my
brother. Ken. as he trimmed
around the 16th green. You
"see. Ken Jr.. was the first.
professional tour caddie that
Payne Stewart ever used.
• Payne was still an amateur
at the time. and usually had a
buddy carry the' hag. hut an
important event in Texas put
Ken Doig Jr. on the bag.
Payne was justbeginning his
great career and didn't have
a lot of money at the time.
Payne wasn't able to pay
Kenny the full fee promised
• but Kenny turned the partial
payment into a good portion
of loot with his pool -playing
expertise that weekend.
-At the -time. both -player --
By Corolonne Doig
and caddie agreed that this
was an I.O.U. situation. Over.
the years the two joked about
the amount outstanding from
a time when the caddie was
better off financially than the
player.
Ken Jr. remembers Payne
as a great guy. a great player..
and. a great friend to all on
tour.
My brother Cam and PGA
Tour veteran . Dan
Halldorson, received the
news from Moe Norman,
while competing in a
tournament last Monday
afternoon. Dan had played
golf with Payne on numerous
occasions and took the news
with shock. The fraternity
that exists on the PGA Tour
was very evident by Dan's
shock and sadness last week
as he visited Seaforth to do
design work on the local
course.
Cam remembers Payne
when he started out on the
tour. Cam and some others
were rookie caddies while
Payne and some other now
famous players were rookies
too.
Payne was .a regular guy
who liked to have a good
time and kibitz with
everyone. Like" any
professional. the circles you
travel in change with your
advances in your career.
Payne's success allowed him
to travel in different circles,
but he never forgot those he
knew from the start.
Years later as Cam and dad
were walking in the crowded
aisles of the PGA show in
Orlando. the celebrity. Payne
Stewart. cut through the
`crowds to greet Cam and ask
him how he was doing and
what he was up to. It was a
great opportunity for dad to
meet this golfing icon and
dad has not forgotten it
either.
My brother • .Todd
remembers Payne Stewart
too. Several years ago while
attending Seneca College's
greens -keeping program.
Todd's class went on a trip
to South Carolina to learn.
about greens maintenance.
different grasses etc. During
thcir trip. the PGA Tour was
playing at Harbour Town in
Hilton Head.

4-H News
thought it would be
great if they could
check out the event
and . the course.
Payne Stewart
arranged for
enough passes for
Todd to take his
entire class to the
event, which he •went on to
win that Sunday.
My mom always picked
Payne in her betting pools.
She liked his grin, his stylish
"Plus Fours' and his Scottish
name. Mom, like everyone
else in the family, feels much
sadness at this tragedy.
1 remember Payne in a
couple of ways. He was one
- of the first players to try the
rain cover made in Seaforth
and had the Seaforth rain
cover on the golf bag that
rainy Sunday in June when
he won his second US Open.
He was always supportive of
the product.
I also remember him
kibitzing with the fellows on
the putting green. He was
always laughing and joking
and having a good time.
If he 'saw me. he would
ask how my brothers were
and how things were going
in Seaforth. I remember him.
sitting on the putting green
just before dark, dressed in
ordinary jeans, tee shin and
runners, playing with his
little son..
People didn't recognize
him as the celebrity Payne
Stewart. He looked like just
an ordinary guy...and 'in
many ways he was. He'll be
missed.
• The sixth meeting of the Huron Sheep Club was held on
Oct. 3 at Florence Pullen's home.
The members split into four groups and each prepared a
lamb for show. •
Tbey had an imitation show with some members showing
and some judging. The groups also took turns learning how to
get the fleece ready for judging.
After they finished with the Iambs. the members wrote a _.
quiz with questitms about sheep and general 4•H information.
They ate dinner and went home.
The achievement day was held Oct. 8.
