Person. . A.speciallaunching for • local activities is scheduled for Nov..2 at McKay Centre in Goderich. The grant titled "Celebrating and Enhancing Our"Seniors' Independence. in Huron and Perth Counties" wasrput together by a • partnership of community seniors and members of the Huron Perth Injury Prevention Committee. which recognized that falls in seniors present one of the greatest risks to loss of seniors' independence. In Huron and Perth counties, the injury admission rates from falls for persons 65 years and older have been consistently. higher than the rest of Southwest .Ontario and the, province. When seniors lose their independence. the costs to society are great as seniors make significant ' contributions to their. families and to their communities. Mobile seniors are more able to contribute their knowledge. insight. time. talent and energy. Senior volunteers will take part in humourous and thought-provoking skits -called "Please help me. I'm falling," developed from a New Horizons grant in the Grey -Bruce area to illustrate positive changes that can be made to create a safer environment. Local talent Eric Turner and Margot Laberge•H II from the Livery have conttbuted their time to work on the production. Forward to Seeing You. Straight ralk From THE BUSINESS DOCTOk POSITIONING Positioning is the single most.important requirer.art. for the survival of your business. You wilt get pos.- tioning and that will give you the opportunity to wrn.' or you.will not get position- - ing and you will be .guara teed to lose. •-Positioning means the customer thinks of you first when he or she needs your product. ' Positioning is the most important.thulg your adver- tising -can do and every ad - you •place works at estab- fishing your.positioning.in the marketplace. -The • - learning process for humarr beings is constant spaced repetition. As your name. logo and. product range gets stuck -,1n their face over and over again you become positioned through constant spaced, repetition. We sometimes call it 'top of mind recognition." . For • example if 1. said "lumber' - - to one hundred people.. • according to market stud- ies, eighty-three of them would say Beaver Lumber. That means Beaver Lumber has 83% top of • mind recognition. Beaver • is the first place they think of when they need (umber. That makes the customer predisposed to go there . first. That gives Beaver an advantage and the opportu, nity to get the sale. Every business must strive to gain top of mind recogni- tion. There are only three ways to get positioned. One is through advertising, - which is the quickest way. rye second way is through ''outh. people talk- • ^c ' _ ::her people about your c:s ness. That takes a iitve longer but many tetteve t -is the -best -way tn- get positioned. .The third • way to get positioned is • through a highly visible • location (Three most ;•,portant tf ngs in retail are lccation, location. loca- tion..) The human brain. 'remembers what is stuck in: • front of .t over and over .. again and it remembers 'firsts. Name for me the `first man to fly solo across the Atlantic. the first man to climb Mount Everest.. or the first man to walk on the • 'moon. ,You can remember . Inose. can't you? Well. I don't need them. .1 have them positioned in my mind as well. What• I need from you s:who did those things second? And you answer, Who cares' which is • exactly the point. You must. be the first thing.the con .sumer thinks of when they have a need for yljur prod- uct or service. •That's the . sweet spot. That is the • money spot. The single most important advantage • of advertising is its ability, through the process of con• • stant spaced repetition, to position. In business it isn't about hoW you play the game; it is about being the first one the consumer wants to play with. The Business Doctor is available for annual meet- ings & sales conventions.
