Keep your trajectory low when golfing in the wind
Saturday was a warm hut windy da, and k•n the gall course
players were struggling to keep then shots n the 'fairway in
play. The \Guth wind made some of the hi J .. s much 'shorter.
but on the way hack into the wind the hole, seemed to go on
forever.. .. • .
When a crosswind was encountered there were even more
moans and groans by golfers undecided in how to play their
next shot. .
Playing in the wind is a challenge at the hest of times. Club
selection and line to the target arc probably the two most
important considerations. Ball trajectory is another problem
but it is often coincidental' with club selection. • ..
It'only makes sense that a helping or "tail wind" will mean
that you will adjust. your club selection downward. choosing a
more lofted club and relying on the wind to carry the. ball
those extra yards. Along with this theory (which usually
works) a hurting or "headwind" will' mean .you need to take a
longer club to bore through the wind and gi► the distance
required.
Many golfers will refer to a one, two or three -club wind.
That is just how many clubs up or down they need to go to
get the yardage they want. Saturday was- definitely a three -
dub day with normal five irons only going the distance of an
eight iron into the, wind. but sailing along like a one iron or
three wood when the wind was helping. • - •
Golfers who generally hit the ball high would have found
the course cxtra challenging as the wind. would seiie the hall
-and hurl it off-line and into the adjacent rough or trees. •
Sometimes. the high trajectory would•hc a benefit.with.the
wind behind. but for the most part windy days should mean
"keep it Jow.",Teeing the hall up a little lower. Widening .your
stance to keep good balance. and swinging easy. all• help on
extra windy days.
