Your Guide to Vehicle Maintenance
Q. Why should -you have your radiator fluid
checked before winter?
A. "To ensure it meets below freezing temperatures
so it does not freeze. New antifreeze provides better
lubrication. Your radiator may also need.to be
flushed due to the breakdown of antifreeze. It may
cause damage to the internal, cooling system." Steve
Fridtley of McLaughlin Chev-Olds informs us.

Q. Why should I repair a stone chip or scratch in my
vehicle?
A. We hear from Mark Penner of Country Automotive
Refinishing "In any place that the paint surface has
broken through to expose the metal, rust will form
over time, and may cause a hole. It is smart to have
these problems repaired or it may cost you more in
the long run."

Q. Why should -I give my vehicle a tune up before
winter?
A. "Cold weather makes it more difficult for
engines to start. A tune up gives you a better cold
engine start and also improves yourfuel economy
by up to 25 - 30% which reduces emissions." Cliffe
Donaven, Service Manager of Teatero Motor Products.

Q. Why should I have my vehicle's suspension and -
tires checked before winter comes?
A. "Tires are the main contact between you and the
road which means they are very important for
winter driving. You should ensure your tires are
durable and free.from any problems such as bad
belts or heavy wear. Without proper suspension in
your vehicle, your brakes may not work as well as
either."_ Murray Kellu of Kelly Auto Service. _
Q. While driving, the only thing between me and
the road are my tires. What is the best way to
maintain and save wear and tear on my tires?
A. Larry Dolmage of Archie's Service Centre responds by
telling us "There are several ways to maintaining
tires. The first is check the air pressure, the second is
to balance the tires, the third is to rotate tires about
every 12,000 km and an alignment every year or
every second year depending on how much you
drive." Proper maintenance of your vehicle's tires
will ensure your safety, aswell as better fuel
efficiency,saving you money.

Play teaches kids

The time spent with our children is important and precious.
It's far too easy to get caught up in daily routines and hectic.
schedules. leaving us few chances to he,together. let alone:
play together.
There aremany reasons why play is important. Physical ,
benefits such as building strength. developing balance 'and 1

through challenges and problems. ycnung.frustration and .
becoming conversant with our environment. intellectual
benefits might include developing memory and applying

All of these are possible through.solnary play.
When we play together. social benefits such as getting
along with others. sharing and taking turns are then
developed. It is important to remember that ehildren'will be
exposed to people of 111 ages and it is therefore. logical to play
with all ages..not Just peers or siblings. as this will help
develop the skills theynced to feel comtortableandconfident
in their world. As you plav together. your child learns more
and feels valued and you will understand your child's needs
better.
The way you play makes -all the difference. Spend time

TIPS FOR HELPING THE ENVIRONMENT
1.Plan your errands to avoid making a lot of short trips.
Cars are at their least fuel efficient when cold.
2.Slow down. The difference between driving at 100 km/h
and 110 km/h is about 10%.
3.Don't idle. If you're just stepping into the convenience •.'
store for a moment, switch off your engine. You'll save fuel,
reduce pollution, and be less likely to have your car stolen.
4.Keep your tires fully inflated. Soft tires increase rolling
resistance, which is the biggest contributor to fuel
consumption at town speeds.
5.Smooth driving. Avoid sharp stops and starts in city
traffic, and try to maintain a steady speed on the highway. Use
your cruise control, if you have it. Look well ahead to
anticipate blips in the traffic, so you can be in the free flowing
lane. '
A lot has been done to make cars more environmentally friendly
and fuel efficient. It's up to drivers to keep them that way.
