Fitness complex committee plans
to approach town .council next
From Paige 1
the project could cohtinue at the high school if the board
would agree to a leasing agreement. in which the board would
not contribute to maintenance costs.
A $25 fee for students who want to use the recreation
complex would generate a third of the maintenance costs if
the complex is built at the school, says Johnston.
He says he estimates membership fees of approximately
$200 to $250 a year for adult members.
Other possibilities include locating the complex near the
Seaforth and District Community Centres or Johnston says.
some private citizens have also offered their -land in Seaforth
as a site for the complex.
"We still think it will serve Seaforth and the surrounding
community well. We don't think it will be frivolous." he said.
The proposed 100 by 150 foot structure would he a
"coverall" structure, made of aluminum and steel in a truss -
arch, design with no weight-bearing walls at the ends and
include an indoor track, a portable gym floor. a dance studio,
squash courts, a weight room, change rooms. offices and
storage space.

stay in their own
communities. We have to
prepare people by giving
them more information," he
said. adding that the Ottawa
Carleton Catholic School
Board has very successfully
accommodated Grades 7 and
8 in their high schools for
several years.
Rachlis said the phasing
out of OAC will drop
secondary school enrolment
by 20 per cent. He said that a
Toss of just 25 students
translates into a revenue loss
of $100,000.
"The funding formula
makes every student
precious," he said.
"Revenues will shrink but
the costs won't go down if
there are no fewer teachers in
the same buildings."
Paramedics ask
Huron County
for job guarantee
From Page 1
Bill Wallace. past president
of the Huron Federation of
Agriculture, said he wants
local paramedics to have
the skills to deal with rural
situations such as farm
accidents.
"They (paramedics) need
to know us (farmers) and
understand our occupation
since they respond when
we need them," he said.
Wallace added that, given
the provincial deadlines,
the most sensible option is
to keep the existing
operators. who. ':ttRderstand
the rural scene."
Huron County
paramedics distributed a
pamphlet outlining their
desire that ambulance
services be publicly -funded
and publicly -operated. The
paramedics also asked that
the county create a job
guarantee, which would
maintain current wages and
benefits, regardless of who
is- ultimately chosen as
their employer or union.
"We had a meeting last
week and we want to
continue to -provide high
quality. patient- first care.
Ambulance care should be
accountable to the public,
not private shareholders,"
said Clinton paramedic Ben
Driscoll.
Seaforth paramedic, Art
McNaughton asked
Seaforth Reeve Lin Steffler
to take a resolution to
county council stating that
since paramedics are an
important resource, their
jobs should be guaranteed
regardless of how the
system ends up being
structured.
"It's important that the
county show some support
for our jobs." he said.
"Paramedics have found we
have to fight for our jobs.
When we got our lay-off
notices it created a great
deal of stress in my life and
I don't blame (ambulance
provider) Brad (Lucas). I
blame the provincial
government for doing this
in a half-essed way."
Paramedics in Seaforth,
Clinton and Zurich
received their lay-off
notices at the beginning of
August. leaving them
wondering if they'll have
jobs by Jan. 1, 2000.
When Steffler asked what
will happen to those
paramedics at the
beginning of January, their
boss Lucas said he's not
yet certain if his licence to
provide ambulance services
will be extended past Dec.
31.
"Extend my licence or
give me some authority to
operate, ambulances and
we'll do everything we can
to extend service withinthe
law," he said.
When asked how he
would like to see
ambulance services
provided, Lucas said he
recommended the county
enter into a five-year
agreement with the current
providers and then possibly
run it themselves.
"If any county could run
it and be cost-effective, this
county could do it. I think
Huron County is very
astute," he said.
The first board meeting in
October will be an
information session on the
topic of school
accommodation review but
Rachlis said an actual list of
schools that could be closed
will not be available until
November. -
However, he did say the
list will be "much smaller"
than last year's list, which
suggested closures and
changes to as many as 19
schools throughout the
district.
At the October meeting.
Rachlis said the board will be
looking for suggestions from
the public in view of the fact
that some closures are
inevitable.
"The bottom line is we
have to find some way to'
provide a quality education
for students." he said.
Rachlis said the last round
of standardized test results in
Grades 3 and 6 showed that
the Avon Maitland hoard is
Live to seven per cent below
the provincial average.
results he attributes to a lack
of available funding for
curriculum support for
teachers..
"It disturbs me that we've
identitied needs in the system
and have no way, to fund
them." he said.
