Using three dinosaur puppets and his-alter.ego Eldritch (a
Scottish word for strange). Rob Ridley. education technician
at the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. told Seaforth
kids at a library puppet show recently that they can make a
po.ttiye Impact on the local environment.
"Everyone knows about the depletion of the earth's
rainforests, the thinning of the ozone layer and the threats to
the giant panda. but there' are local problems too that people
dont even think about." he says. 1.. •
During'the puppet show. which has also been presented in
Clinton. Bayfield and Zurich. students learn that 80 to 90 per
cern of the swamps. marshes and.forests in Huron Countyare
disappearing. causing flooding and a decrease in water
quality,
And. along with the disappearing wetlands is disappearing
habitat for wildlife.
Endangered species. such as the bald eagle. live in Huron
County and others. such as the golden eagle. peregrine falcon
and whooping crane. fly through Huron County while
migrating.
"People don't even think about the bald eagle living in
Huron County. They're not common but they are here. Most
people who see them just think it's another turkey vulture."
says Ridley. '
.Other local problems include soil.erosion. tree harvesting.
'algae blooms in lakes and rivers and littering along the
' highways.
After repeating a pledge to protect. the local environment.
rparticipating•children received a, certificate reiterating the
pledge. ,
"The whole purpose is to give them something that make,
them aware of the situation and maybe do some research
themselves about local problems." he says.
