judging
a great
job
...a dairy show judge
By Scott Hilgendorff
Expositor Editor
With hand gestures, he
signals a circle of calves
and owners to move -
forward, stop and move
-again as he carefully
scrutinizes the livestock.
"Mainly it's a love of
dairy cattle." said -Jeff
Sayles of Paris of why he
judges calf .shows. He was
judging the 4-H dairy
show held Friday at the
Seaforth Agricultural
Society's facilities. •
He• has been judging for
about three years now but
was raised in the dairy
industry. growing up
involved with 4-1-1.
He has even won a few
first -place ribbons himself
before moving on to•
judging. •
"You -start in 4-H and
Yearn M the meetings." he
said about how he has
gained enough experience
to judge a good dairy calf.
From there. it's off to
judging schools where
students learn the finer
points about how to judge
properly and the specifics
about the many different
dairy breeds.
After three judging
schools. one a year. if a
person has scored above
the average score, he or
she can be placed on the
judges list and he called
on communities all•ovcr
to judge shows.
"It kind of comes
natural." he said of his
. ability to find the hest.calf
of the hunch. -
And he's also judging
the owners. watching for
their control of the calf.
how they stand and hold
their halters.
Locally. he judged nine
classes ' with three
categories involving
"showmanship." or how
the entrant handles him or
herself.
The remaining classes
were focussed on• the
calves with Sayles
watching for such things
as how straight the calves
"top lines" are or how
well the animals stand and
that they have a large rib
span..a characteristic of a
good dairy calf.
Sayles. who continues
to dairy farm. enjoys the
judging sideline, not just
for his love of the
industry but for the
strength it builds in public
speaking and the fact he
gets to travel to different
communities and meet
with different people.
Even coming to
Seaforth, there were faces
familiar to Sayles.-
