'Mainly it's a' love of dafiry cattle," said Jeff Sayles of Paris of why he . judges calf shows. He was judging the 4-H daifry show held Friday at the Seaforth Agricultural Society's facilities. / He has been judging for about three years now but; was raised in the dairy itndustry, growing up • involved with 4-H. He has1even won a few -first-place ribbons_himself before moving on to judging. "You start in 4-1-I and 'learn M the meetings." he said abouthow he has. gained enough experience tojudge a good dairy calf. From there, it's off to judging schools where students learn the finer points about how to judge properly and the specifics about thc•many different dairy breeds. - After . three judging schools. one a year, if a person has scored above the- average score, he or she can be placed on the judges list and be called on communities all over to judge shpws. "It kind of comes na1iifal, he said of= -his - ability to find the best calf of the bunch. . And he's also judging the owners, watching for their control of the calf, how they stand and hold their halters. Locally, he judged nine classes with three categories involving "showmanship, or how the entrant handles him or herself. Ttic remaining classes were focussed on the calves with Sayles watching for such things as how straight the calves "top lines" are or how _well the animals stand and that they have- a large tib span, a characteristic of a good dairy calf. Sayles, who .continues to dairy farm, enjoys the judging sideline, not just for his love of the industry but for the strength it builds in public speaking and the fact he -gels to travel to different communities and meet with different people. Even coming, to. Seaforth. there were faces familiar to Sayles. sisHaefflng — Bas Haefling, C.A., P. Ag.
