Flag must be
protected
from desecration
While a trademark may protect the
image of the Canadian flag from being
used inappropriately, it is not protected
from being burned as a political or other
statement
Last week,' a handful of American
protesters dropped by the Supreme Court .
of Canada in Ottawa where they sang
O'Canada and burned a Canadian flag in
protest of a court ruling that protects the
rights of gay people. ,
An onlooker who charged at the
protesters was. turned away bra member
of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
While it was an' -extremely offensive
action to burn our flag, it was not against
the law anda Mountie, a Canadian
symbol, could only stand by as the flag, the
biggest symbo-I ofd this country, was
burned.
Everyone has the right to protest and be
heard. In fact_, th ey.should be listened to as
well, before a person or governing body
makes a decision to ignore the protest or
give it consideration.
But no one should have the right to
desecrate the flag.
Canadian flags are flown high as proud
symbols of our nation.
Burning one is :nothing short of an act
against everyone one of us and it should
not be stood for
A movement is growing for legislation to
make such an act illegal.- •
Hopefully, new legislation can be
adopted to make it illegal.
Hopefully, in the case of foreign citizens
entering our country to desecrate the flag,
it can also have•enough teeth to ensure
they are removed from Canada and never
allowed back.
And hopefully, this_ incident can generate
enough discussion amongst ourselves to
renew a little Canadian pride.
Too few Canadian flags .are flown as it is
and too many of them get torn by the wind
and are left to fly in their tattered states.
Come on folks. Let's show some
Canadian pride and push to have flag
burning made illegal.
