Charity tournaments held in August
As August • fast_'approaches
we find this is the month
•when many- organizations
and charities hold their
annual fund raising
tournaments. These are
generally billed as "fun" -d
raising events with the
emphasis on having fun and
.:raising money, not
necessarily on the golf.
.Golf. offers the perfect
-opportunity for a club, or
organization to raise -some
money and make people
happy at the same time.
There are literally thousands
of charity events held all
over Canada and around the
world each year. Many are
organized by such groups as
the Cancer .or Diabetes
Societies, or by corporations
who use the event to increase
their public profile and
support. a charity at the same
time.
The various •professional
golf tours raise millions of
dollars each year for
hospitals and others. Much of
the .money generated at a
professional tournament is
funneled hack to charities.
-The use of volunteers to
work at most professional
events is a major factor as
well as corporate
sporisor-ship. Golf is big
business' from a fund raising
point of view. Running a
charity.goif tournament can
enhance the operating budget
of many organizations, small
or large. -
The charity tournament
requires planning well in
advance. Choosing a date is
one of the most important
aspects. although most
organizers find that there will
always he conflicts with
.other events. Trying to keep
the. conflicts as far away
geographically as possible
. helps•, as docs knowing the
potential participants. •
Each tournament draws
participants from different
parts of the population. Once
again though, there will be
some overlap. Once a date is
established, you need a
location. A golf tournament
.requires a golf. course and a
.good course•can make all the
difference. Many golf
courses- offer tournament
packagerates that include the
golf; power cart, meal and
usually a donation to the •

prize table.
The- cost will influence the
location since the objective is
to have money left over for
the charity. Knowing the
financial limits of your
potential participants helps.
Offering a tax receipt .also
helps sweeten the pot
although government
regulations are clamping
down on taxreceipts at golf
events. '
The cost of the tournament
package isn't the only thing
an organizer must look at
when choosing a golf course.
Location and ease of access
are important. The difficulty,
especially the length of the
course, is also important..
Many of the participants may
not be true golfers at all. This
may be the only time they
golf all year. They are out for
a nice _day, and an
opportunity to support their
favourite charity. Difficult,
long, and tight courses can
slow up play, aggravate the
participants,-. and be
dangerous when there are
many golfers who have no
idea just where the ball is
going: •
Not all charity events are
straight regulation golf.
Many organizers -opt for a
more user-friendly format
such as a scramble", "two
ball", or "skins" event. These
formats create a team
atmosphere and take the heat
off the non -golfers:
Sometimes adding a celebrity
to golf with, having a guest
speaker, a celebrity auction, a
golf instruction: clinic, a hole
in one prize, complimentary
tee prizes or some other
"hook" also increases
pafticipation and ultimately
the funds raised.
The golf course staff can
also make the tournament
much easier for the organizer
by helping withset-up, prize
selection, scoring, hole and
cart allocation, pairings, and
other "golf tournament"
duties. Then the organizers
just need to worry about
advertising, recruiting
participants, getting prize
donations, and creating ways
to maximize profits. A golf
tournament can be a great
way for a charity to increase
their operating budget or
initiate a capital project. •
It's also a great way for
someone to try their hand at
this great game of a lifetime:
