Mock disaster strikes Hensall Co-op
By Matt Harris
Lakeshore Advance Staff
There were 32 victims here
following an evening
accident July 19 involving
three cars and a school bus.
Nobody was seriously
injured.
How did all those people
manage to cheat death?
It was practice time for area
emer ency response teams,
_ incltrding fire departments,
police and ambulance
services which took part in a
mock disaster, put oh by the
Hensall District Co-op.
Co-op Propane Manager
and Emergency coordinator
for Hensall Butch Desjardine
said that emergency services
from all over Perth and
Huron counties were called
in to help out with the
disaster.
"We set the scene with a
school bus flipped over on
three cars," Desjardine said.
"From there, we had a van
"hit the bus. Also, there
.were a few other
emergencies thrown in."
The other emergencies
included a propane tank leak
and multiple victims with
varying injuries. Desjardine
said a make-up artist from
London was brought in to
make the volunteer victims
look the part.
"I was impressed with how
everything was handled by

op last Monday night.
the teams," he said.
According to Desjardine,
there hasn't been a mock
disaster with this many
victims before. And to make
sure they were doing what
they should, the entire event
was videotaped. Desjardine
said they broke down each
scene to see what they did
right and where they need to
improve.
Blaine. Lucas, operations
manager for the Zurich,
Seaforth and Clinton
ambulance services, said it
was the perfect way to test
out how well all three could
work, together in an
emergency.
"It was good practice for
us, because real emergencies
like that happen so
infrequently," he said. "Plus,
it gave us a chance to meet
the other paramedics,
policemen and firefighters
outside of an emergency
situation."
Lucas said the paramedics
were'responsible for going in
and assessing the situation,
setting up a triage unit and
getting the priority patients
out. It was a good workout
for them, he said.
"Being the closest unit to
the scene, Zurich was the
first one in and set up," he
said. "The rest of the units
came in about 10 minute
intervals, which is about
close to a regular situation."
In addition to the on-site
action. Lucas said the
dispatch service in London
was also going through what
they would be doing in a
disaster situation.
"They had a 'paper
exercise' with all the Huron
County hospitals." Lucas
said. "They identified what
was harpening, how to treat

nu
Luras said they attended a
similar practice disaster last
year in Clinton, as well as at
the salt mines in Goderich
before that.
"It really helps if something
like this ever does happen,"
he said. "It's good to know
each other's roles and how to
operate smoothly."
Const. Gary Martin of the
OPP said they were there
more to keep traffic moving
and make sure onlookers
kept to a safe distance.
"I think it was of real value
to the fire and ambulance
departments, because they
need to be very aware when
dealing with situations like
(propane leaks)," he said.
Martin said there was some
traffic backed up on
Highway 4 and a few people
tried to get a closdr look. but
most of the time the police •
were there as observers.
Celebration planned for Year of Older Person
In recognition of the world's rapidly
aging population and the contributions
that older people make to society, 1999
has been declared "The International
Year of The Older Persons" by the
United National General Assembly.
The Ontario government is helping
communities across the province
organize events to celebrate this special
year by awarding grants for special
events. -
Seaforth Manor was successful in
applying for and being awarded a grant
to host a "Senior's Appreciation
Banquet and Entertainment Program" to
be held on Oct. 20 at the Seaforth and
District Community Centres.
"We are really looking forward to
hosting this event." says Cheryl Phillips,
Activity Director at Seaforth Manor.
"We have planned two other events as
well to mark this occasion within our
facility, but this provides us with The
opportunity to do something for the
seniors out in the community."
"As one of the conditions of the grant
was that 15% of the total was to be
raised within the community, we are
currently in the process of contacting
local councils, service clubs, community
groups and local businesses for
charitable donations. We have been
thrilled so far with the community's
response to this event."'says Phillips.
"Donations do not necessarily, have to
be financial. We also welcome
Correspondents
donations of door prizes or a volunteer
service that could be helpful during the
event." To date. The Classic Tappers
from London and The Paul Brothers and
Shirley from Kirkton have been hooked
to perform at the variety program.
Tickets for the event will go on sale
Aug. 3 and may be reserved by calling
Cheryl Phillips or Tracy Gerber at 527-
0030.
"You do not have to be a senior to
attend," says Phillips, "We are hoping
that family members will join their
senior for what promises to he an
exciting and memorable evening for our
community."
