A series .of fatal and serious accident on Huron .County Roads.- And drivers who still pass on solid lines and drive at speeds in excess of 140 km an hour on 80 km/hr highways. Highways that are sharedr with slow moving farm equipment. Highways that have hills .and hidden intersections. . • Intersections that .have stop signs drivers. ignore. - Ignorance of the basic rules found in the driver's handbook. A book used by youngdrivers with rules that have been forgotten by almost everyone_ And everyone's lives are at risk. 1 The Canadian Automobile Association is asking for an all-inclusive inquiry into the, accidents. on Highway 401 that have killed 12 people in nine crashes between London and Windsor. - The -association -would -like -everything from the surface of the road to the companies who maintain the highway examined- to determine ' why these accidents are happening. While there may be many factors that make that particular stretch more 'dangerous; regular driving practices are surely to blame for many of the accidents that occur' In fact,it hardly makes them accidents at all when looking at the ones caused by the negligence of a driver There has been one suggestion to strictly focus on road maintenance and improvements such as paved shoulders and barricades along the median because it's just a fact of life that people are going to drive 140 km/hr these days and there's not stopping them But there is. Since lives are put at risk by, the excessive speeds, increase the fines several hundred per .cent and Maybe revisiting'.photo radar isn't such a bad idea. When it was in place in the Toronto areas, there was a signifcant reduction in speeds. Rather than -treat it as- a cash grab, use the proceeds from the tickets to make -the highway upgrades. Regardless,, a serious campaign needs to be launched to reeducate drivers about the rules of the road with more than just police blitzes on aggressive driving once or twice a year: And drivers who don't care about their own lives had better start caring about others when they decide to pass on a solid line. The Band will not he considered a School Board Program however. -so continued support from the community i. vital. - When .the Board of Education announced it's decision to cut the Band Program. we. appealed to rhe Huron ;County community to save this 47 year old music program. unique to -our area. Citizens responded quickly. attending School Board meetings. writing .lettere and• offering. fund raising ideas and donatiohs..Service clubs. businesses. organizations. individuals and even a sports team from a small village gave financial assistance to .ensure that the Band could continue into the next season. Even though the Band will receive some funding from the School Board for the 1999-2000 season. there has always been a large shortfall between the amount allocated for the Band and the actual cost of running a program of this size. The Band Booster Club has raised funds almost constantly in recent years just to meet expenses and there has never been much left over to replace ageing instruments and uniforms. Some instruments are cobbled together with duct tape because there has never been enough money to replace them. Repair bills increase constantly even though a "Band Dad" with a soldering gun does minor •fixes whenever possible. ` Through the generosity of our community. the Band has recently been able to purchase 2 new trumpets, a tenor saxophone and a trombone to replace a few of the instruments which no longer work properly and We hope to purchase a few more. in the near future. Recently. the Band with the Goderich Lions Club as their sponsor. applied' for a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. If approved, the survival of the Band will be assured for the next five years: Special thanks to the, Goderich Lions Club: - So, Huron County. you can give yourself a pat on. the back that we were in Mickey's Hometown Parade. in Goderich on July 24th.
