The -committee has :alrcady worked Out restructuring issues such as how recreation and fire services would he shared and how sersices such as streetl ghting and sidewalks would he billed • to the. ratepayers in the ctimhined- municipalitics. McLachlan saidit's wiser for them to have the restructuring • report• completed as something, to go hack tri if an overall plan 'for all .five were to be rejected before -receiving provincial approval. He said it wouldn't take as long after to combine the two plans as it did for the committees to develop them the first time and he thinks they can still has.e the.final plan • approved by the individual councils by November or early December. which -was the deadline anticipated by the original three. . While Brussels and Grey will be attending the Seaforth area restructuring committee meetings, it won't officially become part. of -the process until September.'Scott said; County , council will. receive a progress report in September instead of an official. restructuring plan like it has requested from all municipalities. • - • But Scott said they have already welcomed comments and input from•the other two ;municipalities_ • . "They were included and 'they Were helpful." he said. adding there_ was some healthy discussion at the meeting. • "i' m very happy and hopeful• that things will progress. i know, there •s work ahead to. merge the two plans but you've•got people at the tahle, willing to do it." he said. • "Really, it's not a' bad fit where we're concerned:" said Brussels Reeve - Ralph Watson.' He and Broadfoot point to common interests' among Tuckersrtiith. McKillop. and Grey Township through agricultural issues and Watson. • and Scott. find Seaforth is a community with_ common interest to .Brussels. For example. the Seaforth -medical clinic operates a satellite office in Brussels and Seaforth Community Hospital is commonly used by Brussels residents. Watson also said the Brussels PUC will work.with Seaforth's when there is a project Brussels does not have the equipment to handle obits own. . However. Morris Township has also been a community interest for Brussels but Watson said the municipality wasn't. interested in linking- with Brussels and Grey. • He said Morris Township. is their only connecting link -to the other northern Municipalities and without them. they could not amalgamate into a larger municipality, in northern Huron County. And Broadfoot said there is a real strength in having a. larger municipality. He said with Brussels and Grey Township joining them. the new municipality would have comparable populations to other Huron County restructuring plans and they would be able to operate more cost effectively in -a larger group. •'I think: it's adsantageous to. keep our numbers up. I. think that's a• very crucial point." he said. Alcohol policy still in the works as council gives arena information Developing an alcohol policy will involve a lot -of detail. . Adminisuratoy Jack McLachlan has received'a package of informatioh through the Huron County Health Unit'. regarding a polies afte4 a request from Arena Manager. Graham Ne.hitt. . - This winter. the arena had 'ought approval for a liquor licence suggesting the Liquor Licence. Act would dictate a clear policy on the sale and. .control of alcohol at the facility. After a hearing held because e of community. protest. the licence was dented and Graham has since. asked council to.consid dc ' eloping a town -wide McLachlan told council at its July I? meeting. he would forward' the information package he received to Nesbitt ince.that is where the .request tor a polies originated .and .would eventually bring the. matter back to council's attention tor. - a • possible `recommendation. • • *It's . a fairly detailed. document. McLachlan. said. "It puts a lot of restrictions on the rental of your facility. It's something that has to be looked at very seriously." - Generators ordered for 1'2K - The town is booking two generators that will be brought to town a fess days hefore.the calendar changed to- 2000. The _generators would ensure heat and hydro•at the two facilities but would also be available to. try to protect municipal property if needed. ''If a man wnte,a better book. preach a better sermon. or make -a better mousetrap than his neighbor. tho' he build his house in the-. woods. the world will beata_ path to his door." Forget it Waldo' The better book is in the top-drawer of my desk and last I checked. (early • this. morning) there weren't any footprints on my grass' . 1 would like to offer an alter natise to Waldo s much quos- edfline. It v.on t heyuit as ' poetic but it b a lot more practical. Here goes. 'If.they . don't know you are living in the woods; if they don't know you .wrote. a better . book; if they don't know you can -preach a better sermon; • ifthey' don't know you built a better mousetrap; ain't nobody gonna beat a path to` your .fir,,, Now that isn't rocket surgery but it is reality. [f you are running a business. any busi- ness. and you wish to sur- wive you had better rise to your feet and blow your own hom. (If you don't, no one will do it for you.) Talent and quality of product.br service just isn't enough. You must promote yourself and your products constantly. They must know you are there'or they won't come. (Yes l know, mother taught you to be modest. What mother didn't tell you was that modesty for business people a highly overrated virtue'• Proritotmg .yourself (and your people: enhances the -potential customer view of - your product. Once your message is .implanted- the .hances of . that potential customer call- `. ing you when they require your product or service esca- lates enormously. It is called positioning. In fact, that is what advertising is all about It. is about telling potential customers what a great mousetrap you have and exactly where you live in the woods. Without that infer - illation they won't know you exist never mind beat a path,. to your door. Of all the busi- ness skills you will need to develop the single most important one will be your ability to communicate • effectively. Tell them about your mousetrap or die.
