A safe harvest program_
begins •this week as
organizers rushed to meet the
wheat. harvest that's, almost
four weeks, early this year.
The program, spearheaded ,
by a subcommittee of the
Huron -Perth Injury
Prevention Committee, is
designed to help educate
farmers about safety on the
roads as they bring their
crop's from the fields to the
, grain elevators. •
Working.- with Perth
County Cooperati'Ves and
W.G. Thomspon and Sons
Ltd., two major grain
elevators, a total of eight.
small billboard -style signs
will be posted in sight of
farmers as they unload their
crops. The signs .will carry
some basic safety
information and direct
farmers to pick up
information sheets that
further outline information
they need to know to Netter
protect themselves and other
motorists on the roads.
The. injury prevention
committee. led by the Huron
County Health Unit, involves
partners from across both
Huron and Perth Counties
from members of farm
organizations,to the Ontario
Provincial Police. • The
committee has several sub-
committees working on
injury projects in different
areas from preventing falls in
seniors to helping farmers get
to the elevators safely.
This ,is the first major
initiative 'for the farm safety
subcommittee which is
targetting farmers who may
not have the pro'per safety
features on their vehicles
The committee is
0respon,ding to the absensc of
enforcement regarding farm
equipment laws, such as the
need for special slow moving
vehicle signs. and the lack of
education programs to help
raise, awareness of farmers to
the requirements they must
meet when travelling on
public roads.
Information sheets will
detail some of the specifics
and the committee hoPes the
hillhoards will encourage
farmers to pick up and go
through the material
The committee also hopes
other grain elevators will
respond and offer to post
hillhoards and carry the
information sheets.
Anyone interested in
taking part in the safe harvest
program can contact the
Huron County Health Unit at
