JwIy 31, 111119 News Steffler comes to Centre's defence Fr OM Pegs 1 group for their occupancy: in the basement of this building • When the county decided .in the early 1990c to build a new home -tor the aged. a 'portion of the old Huron few building was saved for the HADC. Steffler said that .a "paperwork trail" indicates .that.in 1441 .an agreement was reached between county and ministryto transfer the building to the centre for S1. While: there was no formal agreement. the centre. agreed to continue as tenants .in the building and. would pay its ,;4urtion of operating: costs which in .1492 was about S.1.5:900 per year.• • Steffler .aid part of the confusion is the county sayin.g the ministry has changed their funding. which i. "partly true. but more• . appropnatelytt•s because'the •beds•in•Huronvtew were re-duc.ed " She" added ,that beds went from 310 down to about -182. "Less residents generates less r.etenue so tin Steffler county costs go ftp." said Steffler:.' "This is a small organization that Ileitis a great number of seniors citizens in this county," said Steffler. "I feel they have to be • permitted to remain. in their present location and just pay their share of the operating costs. Some things are just wrong.-' this is wrong. [think that this.. decision has to.be reversed." • Steffler added that the Centre •should pay:. for their use of the building. buta rent - of 580.00 "is well beyond their means to.pay." • Councillor Laurie Cox of Gc>,dench Township said they don't want to "cripple" the centre. They do wonderful work. Our argument is• with the :Ministry of Health. The ministry: funds these programs . • across the province." he said. adding though that -the -county is being asked to subsidiie the centre where other jurisdictions are not. "We don't .want to. penalize the centre. what we want is the county share. of provincial dollars." he said. Steffler asked if it was possible to "back off' on the bill -to- S4 a square -foot to "give these people the chance to do their work." • "My concern is why would we not go and ask the Ministry of Health first." said Warden Carol Mitchell. • "is it not premature, "should we not go and ask them these questions? We; have costs. we have' overheads and out funding is being cut daily. `Why would our first step not be to:work together with the centre and ourselves and go talk to the province?" Steffler agreed.that-the best .way to resolve the issue is to sit down with the parties concelned and come up with a solution. She also asked. if the centre- was going. to have to pay .this .hill before this matter is resolved. "The hill 4 owing to the county'." said. itchell. - "I would like to see this issue. resolve•d.'. said Steffler. - "I think there's a large number of people in:this county that depend on'this. facility and I dont want:to see that lost." • Municipalities have to decide soon about tin area PUCs From Page 1 the i,nternal, res„urces and •st;itfing too adapt to they.. changes made by the Energy • Competition Act. the act that hos seen the hydro electric industry become privatized. He was comparing business to a game of chess. He Wrote. Here is a game that has been played for untold ages and cash one of us is a play- er in the game of his or her own busineis A chessboard ' irthe world and the pieces are the phenomena of the universe and the rules of the ,tame are what we call uni- versal law. Nov the player on the other side is hidden ' from us but we know that his play is always fair. just and patient. But we also know that he never over- looks a mistake or makes: the smallest allowance for ►gnu- raanee-EEserrone-ean.win. •__- and each of us has an equal Opportunity to Jo so To those who play the game . well they are rewarded with that son of overflowing gen- erosity with which the strong 'hall unite in strength. To those who play the game poorly. they are checkmated without haste. without mal- iceand without remorse." Sounds a little cold Hux but I'm with you. Winning or • losing the game of business is totally dependent on the skill level of the player and the amount of responsibility they are prepared to take for their failures as well as their • successes. In our business turnaround consulting prat= ace the first thing we deter- mine is the' level of responsi- bility the client is prepared . to accept for the mess they find themselves in. 1f the Owner or manager is not pre- pared 16 accept. total respon- sihility sse cant help them. As with most things in life • and particularly in business if you:are havtng•problems and you want to know who or what is causing the prob- lem•buy a mirror. If you • can't:getpast that harsh:real- ity then your business prob- lems are probably terminal. There really isn't any magic to running a successful busi- •ness or turning one around. There are cut and dried rules tothis game. Huxley• called • them Universal Law: i we Call them The Basic Operating- System, tm 11, The point.is that there is a reason - for everything. There is a reason for winning and a reason for losing. We may not always understand what the reason is but there is a reason.•' -if we ask often enough and loud enough we will eventually find the rea- son. When we know how to run a business it is easy. When we • don't, it is impossible. Itis our personal understanding and skill level that deter- .. mines the outcome. Think about it. The results we achieve in any.endeavor are totally and dilectly depen- dent on our level of skill. That level of•skill grows out of the things we learn and constant spaced repetitive practice. If we wish to increase our resultswe must increase our understanding of what we are involved in. 'Business is about learning. None of us can possibly know all there is to know about business or we'd all be bigger than Wal -Man. • The Business Doctor is available for annual meet- ings & sales conventions.
