Shuffleboard
Senior Shuffleboard is held

Junior golfers have an important role
0.
By Carolanne Doig
Seaforth has always been a.
great town for junior golfers
and it's not unusual to see
boys and girls walking and
biking to the course with their
clubs slung over their
shoulders. 'I have even seen
some heading up the road
'with their golf spikes
on...ready to go.
Junior golfers form. an
important - parr of . our
membership and our
attention. tt. began years ago
when youngsters like Bill
MacLean. Chris Coombs. Al
and Brian Nigh.' Steven and
Kevin Bennett. the. Neilsen
boys. Rob, Greg and Deb
Core. and many more
discovered a place where they
could play round after round
of golf alt summer -long. 'As
long as they behaved and
respected the .facility •and its
other members there were few
restrictions. They were
allowed to golf and they did,
Each Tuesday morning,
beginning at 9 a.m. there is a
junior golf instructional clinic
focussing on some aspect of
golf skill, etiquette or course
management. Cam Doig is the
• primary instructor and he is
assisted by some excellent
members so the ratio of
juniors are organized into
threes and fours and sent out
onto the course to play some
holes and have some fun. Not
all are able to complete nine
holes and sometimes a team
event is planned so
youngsters of varying ages
and skill levels can contribute
to the success of the team.
Some of the little people
enjoy the new pitch and putt
-•-course situated on each side
of the entrance lane: There are
nine holes between 30 and 80
yards lofigs. There are target,
poles and circles_ on the
ground to serve as "greens"
until the grass knits in better.
This is a great spot for a
quick session on chipping or
an introduction to the game
• for beginners or golfers of any
age orskilj. • -
We are fortunate in
Seaforth to have support on
junior morning from several
local businesses.
As we know, the secret to
becoming•a good player is
really no secret at all. You just
have to play and play and
play. That is what juniors are
allowed to do in Seaforth.
There are a few times during
the week when juniors are
directed to the putting green
or to a, particular nine, but
most of the time, our juniors
may play the course just as
adults do.
Many of our juniors book
regular tee times, arrange
their foursome, meet at the
course early, warm up on the
range, present themselves to
the starter in lots of time and
head out for an enjoyable
round. They are not limited to
playing' with other juniors and
often we'll see there on the
course with other golfers of
varying age.
Courses that restrict play
because of age are miring
,out on the excitement of
having •someone eight years
old get a hole in one.
Seaforth Golf Club news
Our juniors are doing very
well in the competitive world
of golf. Many of our juniors
played in the regional
Optimist tournament. at
Woodland Links in Clinton.
Some of our juniors who
participated in the Optimist
events were: Lindsay
McEwin, Ashley and Melissa
Marion. Brad Henderson;
Keegan Teichen and Reegan
Price.
Several advanced to the
next level of competition,
which was held at St. Mary's
Golf Club. This was the Mid -
Western Ontario event and•we
congratulate. Lindsay
McEwin, our 16 -year-old
junior lady who won the
event for the, second straight
year with scores of 82-88.
- Lindsay will now attend the
World Optimist Junior Event
in West Palm Beach Florida
beginning on July 20 and we
wish her the best luck.
The Tyson Tour is a series
of . junior invitational
tournaments held around the
area. Juniors enter in the
events and accumulate points
based on how they finish.
Many of our juniors are doing
very well particularly Brad
Henderson who shot a 79 at
Sarnia Golf and Curling Club
last week. At the same event,
Lindsay McEwin sank a 20
foot birdie putt on the second
hole of a sudden death playoff
to win the girl's division after
shooting a 79 in regulation
play.
The Sarnia Club is where
Steve Bennett, an original
Seaforth "ankle -biter" is now
the head professional. July 12,
many of our juniors were at
Huron Oaks where Steve was
assistant pro and coached
Mike Weir, Canada's premier
player on,the PGA tour.
Two junior golfers are
visiting from Scotland. They
are both good players and
while here, entered the
Wingham Men's invitational
on Saturday where they
finished near the top of the
field. We welcome Greg and
Jamie Anton and their family.
Match play and lcague
events continue with sentors
on Monday mornings, juniors
on Tuesday morning, men's
night on Tuesday evenings
and ladies playing Thursday
evenings. Every Monday
night is mentor night.
Beginning at 6::30p.m.
learners and mentors go out
for a few holds of golf and a
chance to learn more about
golf.
The ladies invitation is set
for July 22 and there is a
couples night on July 23.
