Huron Expositor, 1999-07-14, Page 6U Tuckersmith briefs Tuckersmith supports two-tier system of county government Tuckersmith Township council supported a two- tier government for Huron County by endorsing a recommendation from the North Huron Restructuring Committee at its June 15. meeting. "Our position, as of that meeting, was still supporting two-tier government since that's the way McKillop Township and Seaforth are going," said Reeve Bob Broadfoot. On the agenda for Tuckersmith's July 6 meeting was a presentation from Bob Bell, representing The Concerned Citizens for the Promotion and Implementation of a Single -Tier Government in Huron. The recommendation from the Wingham-area North - County Restructuring Committee said it welcomes support and assistance from the county during the restructuring process but objects to 'any proposal to alter the all- councillors strategic planning session decision without . full consultation with all lower tier municipalities. Tender accepted Tuckersmith Township council accepted a tender from Yundt Brothers Construction Ltd. for the reconstruction of William - Street in Egmondville at a tender price of $63,374.29 at its June 15 meeting. Surplus clean fill will level property Any surplus clean fill from ongoing road work in Egmondville will be 'used to level property on the Mill Road adjacent to Milton Dietz Feeds, Tuckersmith Township council decided at .its June 15 meeting. Reeve Bob Broadfoot said surplus dirt was placed on the property of Lot 13 to 16 during road reconstruction a few years ago and it will now be leveled out with the surplus fill so it can be mowed to control weed growth. "It's just a housekeeping item," he said. Resolutions supported Tuckersmith Township council supported two resolutions but turned down a third at its June 15 meeting. It supported a resolution from Tyendinaga Township petitioning the --government to require a full deposit refund system for all refillable beverage containers. It also supported a resolution from Bosanquet requesting the provincial government to provide grants ;and subsidies to municipalities to enable them to extend waterlines into rural areas so that the cost to rural residents is comparable to the cost of urban residents. Council defeated a resolution from the Township of Front of Leeds and Landsdowne petitioning the federal and provincial governments, the minister of education and the local school boards to reinstate bible rdadings and prayer in the Canadian school system. News Marijuana harvest is soon From Pogo 1 he said. Meanwhile, the farmer can't make that much in an acre of corn. ."These (guys) come trespass on a farmer's property.; yank out'the corn plants and piggy back on the farmer's expense; said Scott. adding the number of marijuana crops seems to have been increasing in the past tour or five years. He said it goes in cycles and right now, marijuana is becoming more popular. One reason is because a person drinking and driving can be caught hut an officer can stop someone and know they are stoned hut has no way of testing for it. For that reason. he said people will drink as much as they legally can and turn to marijuana instead at parties. Unless the person has a car accident where someone is injured, the OPP can't take a blood• sample to detect marijuana use. If there is an accident and drug use is found, the penalties are the same as if the person was drinking and driving. But the other penalties aren't. The fine for being found with alcohol is almost $200 while a person charged with possession. of 'a narcotic may have to.go to criminal court but will likely only see a tine of about $1(X) for a first- time offence. It's another • reason marijuana use is growing and Scott said it's frustrating for 0 OPP arc asking farmers to keep their eyes open and are encouraging them to call it they see anything suspicious. Scott said the past couple weeks have seen a number (A- eolis fcalls come in alerting police to suspected marijuana crops and e advises farmers who are hesitant to call the OPP directly .to use Crime Stoppers. The organization will pass the information to the police without the farmer having to identify himself. Scott advises farmers to A marijuana plant take -down • as much police, information as they can about And the people growing it'vehicles or people they sec on in farmers' fields come frorn all walks of. life. While it is becoming more common among teenagers, he said anyone is involved. "We've nailed a 55 -year-old business .owner who was supplementing his business income with a good crop of marijuana." Scott said. • • He said some people will grow 20 plants for themselves while others will work on •a crop of thousands. Without the help of farmers. it's hard for OPP to find the crops. • "These guys -can hit the countryside and ,'o undetected," said Scott.
