Swimming, mini put and.other various games. and a hay ride through the park were enjoyed by the young and not so young. A surprise mist of water with lots of candy fell along the way, Following the games. a potluck supper of beef on a bun, salads, cake and ice cream were enjoyed by -all. • Families attended from Strathroy. It has input devices and a storage sys- tem and .uses programs we call software to perform certain functions. If that can serve as the defining frame- work for describing a com- puter, then the human brain is a cothputer. Our brains have input devices (the senses), and storage systems (memory) and learned habit patterns are much like software pro- grams. We learn and habitu- alise programs like walking, talking and tying our shoes. The..prirhary purpose of this chemical computer we carry between our ears is to create thesehabit pattems. It stores them in memory and lets us retrieve and use them at will. Many of these habit pattern programs are used automatically and habitual- ly. These habit patterns are based on a learned set of beliefs. Most habit patterns are beneficial, some are not quite so. For example, one. very commonly learned habit pattern causes cold call reluctance; When most of us were between three and five our early programmers (our caregivers) taught us not to talk to strangers. It was a good valid program, a defense mechanism. Unfortunately this wonder- ful computer we ppssess never forgets anything and it works automatically and habitually. Imagine you hire a new front line retail associate and put him out on the floor to sell your products. When a customer walks in, the new associate gets a queasy feeling in the pit- of his stomach, turns around and walks away. We shouldn't be surprised. He was pro- grammed to do that. Cold call reluctance- nevertalk to strangers! Fortunately the human com- puter can be reprogrammed. Reprogramming is a two step process. One, we must be consciously aware of why we are experiencing the discomfort and two, we self talk ourselves into. a new learned program, (It is Pow my job. In_ talk to strangers that is what i am being paid to do. The old program is no longer valid.) Cold call reluctance is a major stumbling block in the path of creating long- term returning customers. Help your staff understand their problem and you will help your profits grow.
