Straight Talk From

BUTSINESS

Cold Call Reluctance
A computer has an operat-
ing system. It has input
devices and a storage sys-
tem and .uses programs we
call software to perform
certain functions. If that can
serve as the defining frame-
work for describing a com-
puter, then the human brain
is a cothputer.
Our brains have input
devices (the senses), and
storage systems (memory)
and learned habit patterns
are much like software pro-
grams. We learn and habitu-
alise programs like walking,
talking and tying our shoes.
The..prirhary purpose of this
chemical computer we carry
between our ears is to create
thesehabit pattems. It stores
them in memory and lets us
retrieve and use them at
will. Many of these habit
pattern programs are used
automatically and habitual-
ly.
These habit patterns are
based on a learned set of
beliefs. Most habit patterns
are beneficial, some are not
quite so. For example, one.
very commonly learned
habit pattern causes cold
call reluctance;
When most of us were
between three and five our
early programmers (our
caregivers) taught us not to
talk to strangers. It was a
good valid program, a
defense mechanism.
Unfortunately this wonder-
ful computer we ppssess
never forgets anything and
it works automatically and
habitually.
Imagine you hire a new
front line retail associate
and put him out on the floor
to sell your products. When
a customer walks in, the
new associate gets a queasy
feeling in the pit- of his
stomach, turns around and
walks away. We shouldn't
be surprised. He was pro-
grammed to do that. Cold
call reluctance- nevertalk to
strangers!
Fortunately the human com-
puter can be reprogrammed.
Reprogramming is a two
step process. One, we must
be consciously aware of
why we are experiencing
the discomfort and two, we
self talk ourselves into. a
new learned program, (It is
Pow my job. In_ talk to
strangers that is what i am
being paid to do. The old
program is no longer valid.)
Cold call reluctance is a
major stumbling block in
the path of creating long-
term returning customers.
Help your staff understand
their problem and you will
help your profits grow.
