"You feel you are more fulfilled. You feel you are doing what a doctorshould do. • said Bhimani. To further his interest in rural medicine. he has set up a summer project in Owen Sound where he will look at the need for not just doctors, but specialists in• underserviced areas. While there is a shoStage of doctors across rural and northern Ontario. Bhimani is anticipating a similar situation with existing specialists who are approaching retirement ages. Chan is setting up a project in Petrolia where lie will Huron County Health Unit celebrating Soth anniversary On July 1st, 1949 the Huron County Health Unit doors opened- :in the prcviousDr. Gunn house in Clinton. • With the support of County Council. the Huron County Health Unit was the -25th health unit to open in Ontario and"is now, about to celebrate ,its 50th anniversary. In 1919 Dr.* Robert M. Aldis (Medical Officer of Health 1949 ,to 1966) wrote -"such a health unit means .hot • merely the. c-entraltzation of health authority for .r its municipalities, butra specialization of services to every class and age• group of the population". Communicable diseases like polio and tuberculosis were a major. concern for our community in, the 1950s as these dice_ aces touched their lives. r There werehuge public. • health .gains against' polio with the creation of a polio .vaccine in 1956. The Laura Secord company donated suckers to. give to children that received the vaccine. - Huron Public Health Nurses gave the polios vaccine to 5;076'people in 1959. I Health Unit staff fought ..tuberculosis through chest clinics at Wingham, Goderich,, Exeter Seaforth. and Clinton hospitals. Public Health Nurses staffed the clinics and the local Christmas Seal Committee paid for the cost -of the x-rays.' In 1959, 763 people' attended .the chest clinics. The improvements in environmental sanitation in Huron.. County greatly improved the. community's health. -The Sanitation • Inspectors (Public Health Inspectors) and the Health Unit Veterinarian worked in four key areas: the milk program. frosted food kicker plants, meat establishments. and sanitation. The July toDecemher 1949 report notes that "the operators of many of the frosted food locker are to be commended for their efforts -to operate satisfactory plants as they [the operators) meet with considerable opposition frbm the public regarding such matters as 'fast freezing'." Inspections were done of dumps. . eating establishments. grocery: stores.' schools. septic tanks. nursing homes. and camps. Water samples were also taken of private and municipal water supplies. Maternal. infant, and childhood heath were promoted in a variety of ways. The first prenatal class (preparation for childbirth course) vita.' held in 1953. Between 1953 and 1959. 524 classes were offered to 4.587 participants. The arrival of public health services in Huron provided Public Health Nurse visits now babies received home visits from a Public Health Nurse. Hugh Berry. Reeve of . Usborne Township and the Board of Health Chair in 1949 felt that "a health unit in Huron was long overdue." In the first Health Unit report Berry; wrote, •"health is vital to everyone. It has to be guarded and carefully watched from the cradle on. Unless we prevent•disease and promote health. the opportunity to gain health, happiness;:and an increase in life span can be lost ', Join the Health Unit in celebrating 50 years of protecting and :promoting the health of Huron at our open house on June 18 frqm 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Health and Library Complexe For more information call the Health Unit at 482- 3416. study the need of an emergency room in that smaller centre where patients could potentially be sent to London or Sarnia hospitals. Both think all universities need a program like this to help students realize there is more to rural medicine than just treating coughs and colds. Chan said they could see in Seaforth that they are not lett on their. own and doctors have other specialists they can cpnsult with in neighbouring cities' like London and Stratford if they have questions or need support treating a patient... He said knowing there is support makes- it Icss intimidating to leave an urban centre. Bhimani also points out the quality of life in 'the rural areas and that medical students in the_ program can sec the advantages to living outside'the city where. if they have outdoor interest. they can enjoy them all around the communities they might choose. - At the same time. he also noticed a doctor who lives in London and commutes to Seaiorth. In that case, he said medical students .tan also see they don't have to leave their city homes- to enjoy 'the benefits of family medicine in a rural arca.
