Computer Use on Children's Vision .
. Bv: Dr. Luis LaPlante
Today; millions of children use computers on a
daily -basis at school and at home. Children can experience
the same symptoms related to extensive viewing
of computer screens as adults. -including eye dis.omfort.
fatigue. blurred vision. and "headaches. However, some
unique aspects make them more susceptible. :
than adults to the leve opment of these•prohlems. •
Many children keep.pertnrming an entoyahle task
with great concentration until near exhaustion te.g.. play:
ing-video games torhours.i. Doing.thts can cause the eyes'
focusing -system to "lock in"'making vision hlurry at other
distances long•atterward. Eye imtation may also occur
hecause tit poor hlinkieg habits often associated with star-
ing at-a•video 'screen. Children tend to retract their upper
eyelids more than normal increasing tear evaporation and
causing dryness. .' ..
A child is very adaptable and frequently ignores a
problem that would otherwise he addressed hy an adult. A
good example wriuld be changing the computer •
arrangement or the surroundings"to reduce _fare. improve
posture•and achieve -note comfortable vies. enc. they .also
tend to accept hlurred`yision caused by nearsightedness
(mnvopia). farsightednessthyperopia•). or astigmatism
because they think everyone sees the way, they do!-
Here. are some -things -to consider for young users:•
Have the child'; vision checked. This, ensures that he
or she can sec clearly and comtonahly and detects any -hid-
den condinons that may contribute. to evearain.
- Strictly entdrecthe amount Of continuous time spent
on the computer..A ten-minute break every hour will help ,
minimize eye focusing prohlems and eye irritation caused
hy improper blinking.
Carefully check the height" and arrangement of the •
computer. Children -are smaller and rnonrtors .erc'us'.ually
(00 high. A good solution_ is an -adjustable chair .and a toot-
`tool"to supportthe feet. Remember that"the easiesrway.to
view a monitor is slightly This will itiso reduce
neck and hack discomfort.
Check'torglare. There should -he no light sources
retlecting:otf thescreen from above or hehind. Windows -
should not he directly visible when sitting in front of the •
monitor. Reduce room iighting-to about hail of normal,
Children:have different -needs. A• small amount.oteffort
can help reinforce appropriate viewing habits and assure
comfortable and enjoyable computer use. --
