Education Commission sees
unique Catholic board partnership

The recent Education
Improvement Commission
(E1C) review of the Huron -
Perth Catholic District School
Board won't have been "a
waste of time" if the province
responds to the board's
concerns about transportation
and;special education. said
board chair Louise Martin.
"It was a time-consuming
process. The reports took days
to fill out. But. it's too soon to
say if we're going to get -out
of it what we put into it. 1t
_remains to be seen if anything
good willWconieOut of it." said
Martin.
Last --`month. trustees
expressed their frustration that
the Catholic board had to go
through .the review even
though it is not a recently-
amalgamated board. One of
the main purposes of the
review, which is happening to
all school boards across the
province, is to review how
amalgamation is progressing.
Martin said trustees
expressed•concern to tike EIC
review teattn, when they came
May 24 and 25, about
provincial funding formulas
for special education and
transportation, neither of
which provide enough money
to do the job. •
"They (the review team)
said they've been hearing
concerns , about special
education. funding over and
over again throughout the
province," she Jaid.
"We also told. them how
disappointed we are /that
everyone's being painted with
the same brush," she salt] of.
the province's inability to sec
the savings the Huron -Perth
board is already making by
sharing transportation costs
with the Avon Maitland
District School Board.
Martin said the EIC review
1 team was "very,. very
impressed" with the Stratford
Education and Recreation
Complex (SERC), : a
partnership between the
Catholic and public: school:
boards and the city of
Stratford which was hfilt
about 10 years ago at the site
—Of-SC.-.Michael Secondary
School and Northwestern
Secondary School.
"They said it was one of the
most interesting partnerships
they've seen, especially since
the -city was apart•of it. that's
what. they thought made it
unique," she said. •
The EIC review team- was
also impressed. by the good
relationship between the
board. adminstration and staff
at the Huron -Perth hoard. a
message that came out 'from
several groups interviewed by
the team.
"They said. 'What's, in ,the
water up hen:?' said Martin
"But, the respect and good
relations between the hoard
and the staff is something

he said.
If they -gave the school
